Russia imposes sanctions on UK leaders

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several top U.K. Cabinet ministers and politicians are banned from Russia.
  • In March, Moscow imposed a similar ban against US President Joe Biden in retaliation for American sanctions against the Kremlin over the conflict in Ukraine.
  • The UK sanctions have included financial measures designed to damage Russia’s economy and penalise Russian President Vladimir Putin, high-ranking officials and Russian oligarchs close to the Kremlin.

Anya Shrubsole retires from Cricket

  • England’s World Cup-winning team pacer Anya Shrubsole announced her retirement from international cricket after a 14-year-old career span.
  • Shrubsole ended her international career as England’s 4th highest ODI wicket-taker and the highest wicket-taker for her country in the T20I format.
  • Shrubsole bagged 9 wickets at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 during England’s run to the final. Her best figure in the tournament came in the final against Australia.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of BilquisEdhi, a Pakistani humanitarian activist.
  • A professional nurse, Bilquis was called the Mother of Pakistan. Her charity saved thousands of unwanted babies by placing jhoolas (cradles) at Edhi Homes and centres across the country.
  • She was felicitated with various national and foreign awards including the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice (2015), and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service.

  • Former Union minister CM Ibrahim took over as state president of Janata Dal (S) in the presence of national president HD Deve Gowda and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy.
  • The incumbent president, HK Kumaraswamy, has been appointed chairman of the JD(S) parliamentary board.
  • Originally from the Congress, Ibrahim had defected to the then Janata Dal in 1994 before the party won the assembly polls and Deve Gowda became the chief minister.

  • Legendary Odia singer and music director PrafullaKar died at his Bhubaneswar residence due to age-related ailments. He was 83.
  • Kar was an eminent musician, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist. He was popular for his numerous songs including ‘Kamala DeshaRajakumara’.
  • He had received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015 and was honoured with Jayadeva award in 2004. He had received the state film award eight times, six times in a row.
