India extends $1 billion line of credit to Sri Lanka

  • India extended a $1 billion credit facility to Sri Lanka which is in the midst of a severe economic crisis triggered by a shortage of foreign exchange.
  • The assistance is to enable Sri Lanka to import food, other essential commodities and medicines from India to help the Sri Lankan people during a difficult time.
  • Delhi has provided a total financial assistance of $2.4 billion to Sri Lanka, but this will only partially help mitigate the country’s economic meltdown.

  • President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 coordinator Jeff Zients and his deputy Natalie Quillian are leaving the administration next month.
  • The selection of Jha comes as the Biden administration has come under criticism for confusing public messaging around the virus as many restrictions and mandates are easing.

Physicist Eugene Parker passes away

  • Astrophysicist Eugene Parker, who theorized the existence of Solar winds passed away at the age of 94.
  • He was a known visionary in his field of heliophysics, focused on the study of the sun and other stars. His theory was confirmed by NASA spacecraft mission to Venus.
  • NASA honored Parker’s scientific contributions in 2018 by naming a spacecraft, Parker Solar probe after him.

ICJ orders Russia to suspend Ukraine invasion

  • The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Russia to cease military actions in Ukraine immediately, in a preliminary decision in a case brought by Kyiv.
  • The judges added that Russia must also ensure that other forces under its control or supported by Moscow should not continue the military operation.
  • Although the court’s rulings are binding, it has no direct means of enforcing them and in rare cases countries have ignored them in the past.

Jhulan Goswami becomes first woman to take 250 wickets in ODI

  • Jhulan Goswami scripted history and became the first women cricketer to take 250 wickets in a WODI.
  • Jhulan, playing in her 199th ODI match, achieved the feat while bowling against England in a group phase match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
  • In 2nd place is Cathryn Fitzpatrick of Australia with 180 wickets along with West Indies’ Anisa Mohammed.
