Strange gas movements near center of galaxy

  • Astronomers have detected unusual movements of gas clouds near the centre of our galaxy, and they could be pointing the way to the most elusive species of black hole.
  • Researchers tracking the gasses in the middle of the Milky Way have concluded the clouds are orbiting an object 10,000 times the mass of the Sun - and yet, when they look at where that object should be, nothing is there.
  • The most obvious explanation is a quiescent black hole, one that isn't actively feeding, and therefore is emitting no detectable radiation.

IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab set to acquire CPL team St Lucia Zouks

  • Kings XI Punjab is set to acquire the St Lucia franchise of the Caribbean Premier League, becoming the second IPL team to own a CPL outfit after Kolkata Knight Riders.
  • St Lucia Zouks is one of the six teams competing in the CPL. The team is led by former West Indies captain Darren Sammy.
  • The Caribbean Premier League, which began in 2013, is among the established T20 leagues in the world.

Wuhan evacuees discharged

  • At least 220 people, who tested negative for COVID-19 (coronavirus) infection, in quarantine at Manesar Army Camp after being evacuated from Wuhan in China, are set to be discharged.
  • In wake of the virus outbreak in Wuhan, the Government of India had conducted evacuation of its citizens in two phases on February 1 and 2.
  • Responding to the emergency requirement of creating and managing a quarantine facility for around 300 Indian students being brought back from Wuhan, the Indian Army had set up such a facility near Manesar.

Sachin Tendulkar wins Laureus Sporting moment award

  • Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian sportsperson to win a Laureus World Sports Award, in the 20th anniversary edition of the event also known as the ‘Oscars of Sport’.
  • Tendulkar accepted the award for Laureus best sporting moment, which was given for India’s World Cup winning moment in 2011, when his teammates carried him on their shoulders for a lap of honour.

Bengali actor Tapas Pal dies

  • Bengali actor and former Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal died in Mumbai on February 18 after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 61.
  • In 1980, Tapas Pal made his debut in the Bengali film industry with Tarun Majumdar's Dadar Kirti. Tapas Pal has co-starred in several films including Nishantey, Samapti, Chhokher Aloy and Nishantey.
  • Four years after his first film, Tapas Pal made his debut in Bollywood with Abodh in 1984 and was cast opposite Madhuri Dixit.
