Bhutan’s highest civilian honour for PM Modi

  • Bhutan conferred its highest civilian award NgadagPelgiKhorlo on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of the country’s National Day.
  • The award adds to a long list of civilian honours bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi by other nations.
  • Modi is the first foreign head of government to receive the NgadagPelgiKhorlo, Bhutan’s highest civilian award, which is considered the pinnacle of the country’s honour system as it takes precedence over all other orders, decorations and medals.

Tamil Thai Vazhthu declared state song of Tamil Nadu

  • Chief minister M K Stalin announced ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ as the state’s song. The government issued an order making it compulsory for everyone to stand while the song is sung during government events.
  • The move comes a week after the Madras high court observed that ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ is a prayer song and not an anthem.
  • The Madras court said there was no statutory or executive order requiring the attendees to stand up when the song was played.

US develops software to predict actions that can attract China’s ire

  • U.S. military commanders in the Pacific have built a software tool to predict how the Chinese government will react to U.S. actions in the region like military sales, U.S.-backed military activity and even congressional visits to hotspots like Taiwan.
  • It looks at data since early 2020 and evaluates significant activities that had impacted U.S.-Sino relations.
  • The computer-based system will help the Pentagon predict whether certain actions will provoke an outsized Chinese reaction.

Controversial judge demoted by SC collegium

  • The Supreme Court Collegium is learnt to have decided not to recommend the name of Justice Pushpa V Ganediwala as a permanent judge after she gave some controversial judgments including the “skin-to-skin” contact verdict in a POCSO case.
  • The Collegium’s decision means Justice Ganediwala, serving at Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, would be demoted back to district judiciary at the end of her additional judgeship in February 2022.
  • The three-member Collegium for deciding appointments in High Courts comprises Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, and Justices UU Lalit and AM Khanwilkar.

Hidden water discovered on Mars

  • A Mars orbiter launched in 2016 has spotted water in Mars’ canyon system called the Valles Marineris. The canyon system is the largest in the Solar System and is about ten times longer and five times deeper than Earth’s Grand Canyon.
  • The RoscosmosExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter is a joint mission of the European Space Agency and the Russian Roscosmos agency.
  • The water was spotted using the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO)’s Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND) instrument, which helps map hydrogen on the surface of the red planet.
