President Trump considering pardon for Edward Snowden

  • U.S. President Donald Trump said he is considering a pardon for Edward Snowden, the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor - now living in Russia - whose leaks shook the U.S. intelligence community in 2013.
  • U.S. authorities for years have wanted Snowden returned to the United States to face a criminal trial on espionage charges brought in 2013.
  • Snowden fled the United States and was given asylum in Russia after he leaked a trove of secret files in 2013 to news organizations that revealed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the NSA.

Saudi Arabia asks Pakistan to pay back loans

  • Saudi Arabia has ended a loan and associated oil supply to Pakistan due to Islamabad’s criticism that Riyadh-dominated Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is not doing enough on the Kashmir issue.
  • The dispute between the two longtime allies is putting pressure on the fragile external finances of the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan and pushing Pakistan further into the arms of its other traditional ally, Beijing.
  • Riyadh has demanded Pakistan repay part of the $3bn loan and has frozen a $3.2bn oil credit facility because of a dispute over how to deal with New Delhi on Indian-administered Kashmir.

President Trump’s brother Robert Trump passes away

  • Robert Trump, 71, the younger brother of President Donald Trump, died at a New York hospital, Donald Trump announced in a statement.
  • Robert Trump had been admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.
  • He had served as an executive vice president of the Trump Organization. Part of his duties including overseeing the organization's Atlantic City casinos.

Suresh announces retirement from International Cricket

  • Suresh Raina, one of India's prolific white-ball players in the last decade-and-a-half, announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The 33-year-old is among the few who scored centuries across formats having played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals with nearly 8000 international runs.
  • Raina's best moment was a crucial unbeaten knock in a tricky World Cup quarter-final against Australia during the triumphant 2011 campaign.

MS Dhoni retires from International Cricket

  • MS Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down curtains on a near 16-year-long storied career.
  • Dhoni retires as India’s most successful captain in limited-over internationals, having won three ICC trophies - 2007 T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy - the only captain to do so.
  • The announcement means that Dhoni’s last India game would remain the semifinal of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in which India lost to New Zealand by 18 runs.
