Biomarkers of ovarian cancer discovered

  • Researchers at the Cancer Institute (WIA) have identified a panel of five protein markers in the blood that can help with an early diagnosis of a common and lethal form of ovarian cancer.
  • Early diagnosis of ovarian cancer has been a challenge; the purpose, therefore, is to identify plasma proteins differentially expressed in epithelial ovarian cancer patients.
  • The crude incidence rate for ovarian cancer in India is 5 to 6 per 1,00,000. Stage IIIC cancers account for nearly 75%, with survival among them being around 30-40%.

India registers decline in Maternal Mortality Ratio

  • The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in India has declined to 113 in 2016-18 from 122 in 2015-17 and 130 in 2014-2016, according to the special bulletin released by the Office of the Registrar General’s Sample Registration System (SRS).
  • One of the key indicators of maternal mortality is the MMR, defined as the number of maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births.
  • The target 3.1 of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations aims to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 1,00,000 live births.

India set to be world’s first green railway

  • Ministry of Railways, with a goal of transforming Indian Railways into Green Railways by 2030 has taken a number of major initiatives towards mitigation of global warming and combating climate change.
  • Railway Electrification, improving the energy efficiency of locomotives & trains and fixed installations, green certification for installations/stations, fitting bio-toilets in coaches, and switching to renewable sources of energy are parts of its strategy of achieving net-zero carbon emission.
  • Indian Railways has also taken a number of initiatives to promote solar energy. Indian Railways is working to harness the potential of 500 Mega Watt (MW) energy through rooftop Solar panels.

Government regulates online class sessions

  • Schools can hold live online classes for a maximum of 1.5 hours per day for Classes 1-8, and three hours per day for Classes 9-12, according to the Pragyata guidelines for digital education, released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
  • For kindergarten, nursery, and pre-school, only 30 minutes of screen time per day for interacting with parents is recommended.
  • These guidelines, prepared by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), are only advisory in nature, and State governments have been asked to build on them and formulate their own rules, based on local needs.

Roshni Nadar Malhotra appointed chief of HCL technologies

  • Roshni Nadar Malhotra was appointed the chairperson of HCL Technologies. She replaces her father Shiv Nadar, who would continue as managing director and hold the designation of Chief Strategy Officer.
  • Malhotra, until recently the chief executive officer and non-executive director of the company, is one of the richest women in the country.
  • Malhotra runs the company's philanthropic arm and she is also the founder and trustee of The Habitats Trust, a foundation working towards protecting habitats and their indigenous species.
