India becomes founding member of global alliance on AI

  • India has joined leading nations of the world including USA, UK, EU, Australia among others as a founding member of a league of nations which has launched a Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI or Gee-Pay).
  • The first of its kind initiative is aimed to guide responsible development and use of AI, grounded in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth.
  • The multi-stakeholder initiative will work towards evolving better understanding of the challenges and opportunities around AI using the experience and diversity of participating countries. It will also support cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities.

India set to be elected to UN Security council

  • India is set to get elected unopposed as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term starting in January 2021.
  • India along with Mexico and Kenya will get elected comfortably, with contests expected for the other two non-permanent seats for which voting will take place.
  • The UN Security Council has 10 non-permanent members besides the five veto-wielding permanent ones--Britain, China, France, Russia and the US.

Scientists break down three stages of Coronavirus infection

  • Scientists have described three distinct phases of COVID-19 disease progression in patients, urging medical professionals to consider an individualised treatment approach for patients based on their symptoms corresponding to these stages of infection.
  • During the early infection phase (Phase 1), they said the virus multiplies inside the body and is likely to cause mild symptoms that may be confused with a common cold or flu.
  • The second phase is the pulmonary phase (Phase 2), when the immune system becomes strongly affected by infection, and leads to primarily respiratory symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, and low oxygen levels.
  • The third, hyperinflammatory phase, occurs when a hyperactivated immune system may cause injury to the heart, kidneys, and other organs.

India and China face casualties in Galwan valley skirmish

  • The Chinese army suffered 35 casualties during the violent clash with the Indian military in eastern Ladakh's Galwan Valley, according to US intelligence reports. The figure could be a combination of total number of soldiers killed and seriously wounded.
  • The Indian Army had earlier said 20 Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in the biggest-ever military confrontation between the two armies in over five decades.
  • The clash was the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La in 1967 when India lost around 80 soldiers while over 300 Chinese army personnel were killed in the confrontation.

Temple unearthed in Nellore

  • A historic temple of Nageswara Swamy buried in sand was unearthed at Perumallapadu in Nellore district on Tuesday.
  • The temple, believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parasurama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, got buried over a long period of time as river Penna changed its course.
  • The brick structure may have got submerged in sand dunes probably after the 1850 floods, according to archaeology experts.
