India and France conduct joint patrol in south Indian Ocean

  • The navies of India and France concluded their second joint patrolling in the South-Western Indian Ocean last week.
  • It is the second time that France and India have carried out “joint patrolling” out of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
  • The Indian and French navies regularly undertake coordinated operations under the Varuna series of bilateral exercise.

PM Modi inaugurates India’s first 5G testbed

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first 5G testbed to enable startups and industry players to test and validate their products locally.
  • The testbed has been set up at a cost of around ?220 crore. It is an important step for self-reliance in the direction of critical and modern technologies.
  • The 5G testbed has been developed as a multi-institute collaborative project by eight institutes led by IIT Madras.
  • In the absence of a 5G testbed, startups and other industry players were required to go abroad to test and validate their products for installation in a 5G network.

Sweden applies to join NATO

  • Sweden will apply to formally join NATO, following in the footsteps of neighboring Finland. This will mark its departure from neutral status.
  • It will be followed by ratification in all the NATO member's parliaments and after that, the government will return to Parliament with a proposal for ratification for Swedish membership of NATO.
  • Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked a rapid shift in public opinion in both countries, one of which, Finland, shares an 830-mile land border with Russia.

Elisabeth Borne appointed French Prime Minister

  • Centrist politician Elisabeth Borne was appointed France’s new prime minister, becoming only the second woman in history to hold the post.
  • Borne, 61, the labour minister in French President Emmanuel Macron’s previous government, succeeds Jean Castex, who resigned.
  • She joined Macron’s centrist party in 2017. She was transport minister and then minister of ecological transition in Macron’s first government.
