Neera Tanden appointed White House Senior adviser

  • Indian-American Neera Tanden has been appointed senior adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden, two months after she withdrew her nomination as Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
  • She has been entrusted with two tasks – launch a review of the US Digital Service, and plan contingencies that could result from the Supreme Court's consideration of Republican lawsuits seeking to strike down the Affordable Care Act.
  • Ms. Tanden previously served as a senior adviser for health reforms at the US Department of Health and Human Services.
  • She worked with Congress and stakeholders on particular provisions of former President Barack Obama's signature legislative achievement, the Affordable Care Act.

China’s Zurong rover lands on Mars

  • China has successfully landed a spacecraft on Mars. The six-wheeled Zhurong robot was targeting Utopia Planitia, a vast terrain in the planet's northern hemisphere.
  • Until now, only NASA has been able to land on Mars. All other countries that have tried have either crashed or lost contact soon after reaching the surface.
  • Zhurong, which means God of Fire, was carried to Mars on the Tianwen-1 orbiter, which arrived above the planet in February.

Arjan Bhullar becomes first Indian origin person to win MMA title

  • Arjan Bhullar dethroned longtime champion Brandon Vera to capture the ONE Heavyweight world title and become the first Indian-origin MMA world champion in history.
  • By defeating Vera, Bhullar ended the Filipino-American’s five-year championship-winning run. He had joined MMA after finishing his wrestling career.
  • Bhullar is a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist (at the 2010 edition in New Delhi). At the 2012 Olympics in London, he became the first Indian-origin freestyle wrestler to represent Canada.

Congress MP Rajeev Satav dies

  • Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Satav died following post-COVID-19 complications. He was on ventilator support for the last few days.
  • Satav was elected to Rajya Sabha in March last year. He has also served as a Lok Sabha MP from 2014 to 2019 from the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra and has been a legislator in the Maharashtra Assembly.
  • Satav was counted among the inner circle of supporters of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi. He was also president of the Indian Youth Congress and was currently in-charge of Gujarat.

Financial Express managing editor Sunil Jain passes away

  • Sunil Jain, managing editor of the Financial Express, succumbed to Covid-19-related complications in New Delhi.
  • He started his journalism career with India Today as a business editor after a brief tenure at FICCI as an export policy expert before joining The Indian Express to head the business and economy section.
  • Prior to Financial Express, Jain was senior associate editor at Business Standard. He was an alumnus of the Delhi School of Economics.
