Mohun Bagan merges with ATK football club

  • Mohun Bagan, one of the oldest football clubs in the world has entered Indian Super League by merging with Atletico Kolkata.
  • The merger will see RP-Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG) group owned ATK hold 80% of the newly formed entity while Mohun Bagan will own the rest of the 20% shares. The newly formed club will be a part of the Indian Super League (ISL) from the 2020-21 season.
  • The new club will have brand names of both ATK and Mohun Bagan and it is widely expected that the new name will be 'ATK Mohun Bagan Football Club.

New 'Super-Earth' discovered orbiting Proxima Centauri

  • A new ‘Super-Earth’ planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, which is the Sun’s nearest neighbouring star, has been discovered by scientists.
  • The Proxima c is the second possibly habitable planet, which has been discovered in the same star system, after the Proxima b’s discovery back in 2016.
  • The new Proxima c planet is being seen as a prime candidate for a ‘super Earth’, though it is believed to be much smaller than Proxima b. The new planet takes 5.2 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Proxima Centauri star.
  • Super Earths are rocky planets that bigger than Earth, without a huge gas envelope surrounding them.

China’s GDP records slowest growth in 3 decades

  • China's economic growth sank to a new multi-decade low of 6.1% in 2019 as consumer demand weakened and also due to a trade war with Washington.
  • Government data showed growth was down from 2018's 6.6%, already the lowest since 1990.
  • Economic growth for 2019 was at the low end of the ruling Communist Party's official target of 6 to 6.5%. 

Facebook not to sell ads on WhatsApp

  • Facebook has reportedly decided not to sell ads on WhatsApp, a controversial plan that forcedthe co-founders of the company to quit.
  • It is being alleged that Zuckerberg was in a rush to make money from the messaging service and undermine elements of its encryption technology.
  • Facebook bought WhatsApp for $22 billion in 2014.

Myeloma risks higher in Indians than whites

  • A leading Oncologist based in US has claimed that coloured people are more at risk of developing Myeloma than Whites. Myeloma is a cancer of bones and its tissues.
  • It is two or three times more common in African Americans than whites. That is a lot more than most cancers.
  • If response to therapy varies by the racial group, then studying racial origins will also hold the key to better treatment protocols.
