The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to increase the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years. This comes a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement during his Independence Day address from Red Fort in August 2020.
At present, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 and for women is 18. Now, the government will bring amendments to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act and Hindu Marriage Act to give the new proposal a shape.
The proposal was recommended by the task force headed by Jaya Jaitley in NitiAayog. Dr VK Paul was also a part of the task force.
The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has inscribed ‘Durga Puja in Kolkata’ on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Durga Puja is an ancient festival celebrated in the country for many centuries. In total, 14 Intangible Cultural Heritage elements from the country have now been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List.
The other festivals or carnivals which have been recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity are three each in South America and Europe respectively.
