UK hands over recovered Indian antiques

  • The British police has handed over to India ancient idols of Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Sita that were stolen from Tamil Nadu in 1978.
  • The idols, being sent back to Tamil Nadu, were stolen from a temple built in the Vijayanagar period in the Nagapattinam district. They were voluntarily handed over to the police by an unidentified UK-based collector.
  • Successful restitutions have taken place in recent years from various countries including Germany, France, Australia, and the US, while work is ongoing on more such items.

Kerala to have certified snake handlers

  • The Kerala Forest Department has framed guidelines for rescuing snakes from human dominated places and releasing them in uninhabited areas.
  • The move to certify snake handlers comes amid allegations of unscientific approaches by snake catchers that tend to create stress to the animal and pose risk to their and others’ lives.
  • Various parameters, including experience, age, health as well as track record will be considered during the selection process. Those short-listed will be required to undergo mandatory training on safe and scientific handling of snakes.

Israel, UAE and Bahrain sign historical Abraham Accord

  • US President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for the signing of the historic Abraham Accord, which is the first Arab-Israeli peace deal in 26 years.
  • The UAE was represented by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and Bahrain by Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani. The Arab Accord -- essentially bilateral agreements with Israel -- does not mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  • Egypt was the first Arab State to sign a peace deal with Israel in 1979. Jordon signed a peace pact in 1994.
  • As per the agreements, the UAE and Bahrain will establish embassies, exchange ambassadors, cooperate and work together with Israel across a range of sectors, including tourism, trade, healthcare, and security.

Lionel Messi becomes second billionaire footballer after Ronaldo

  • Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi has become only the second billionaire footballer after arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo achieved the feat earlier this year.
  • The Barcelona captain also pipped competition from Ronaldo to retain the top spot as the world's highest-paid footballer in 2020.
  • Third on the list is PSG superstar Neymar, who is due to earn a reported $96m this year. Neymar's PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe took fourth place on the list and is set to earn $42million this year.

Avni Doshi makes it to shortlist of Booker prize

  • Dubai-based Indian-origin author Avni Doshi is among the six authors shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize for her debut novel ‘Burnt Sugar.’
  • The shortlist was unveiled virtually in London after judges re-evaluated the 13 longlisted novels published in the U.K. or Ireland between October 2019 and September 2020.
  • Doshi, born in the U.S. and now living in Dubai, has previously spoken about the long journey to her first novel, which was released in India last year as ‘Girl in White Cotton’.
