Centre notifies jurisdiction of Krishna and Godavari river board

  • Seven years after their constitution under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the Centre has notified the jurisdiction of Krishna and Godavari River Management Boards (KRMBand GRMB).
  • Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) issued the Gazette notification in exercise of powers conferred by Section 87(1) of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
  • The notification brings 35 projects in the Krishna basin and 71 in the Godavari basin, under the boards’ purview, empowering them to operate the headworks of barrages, dams, reservoirs, regulating structures, part of canal network, transmission lines and the power houses at the projects.

Karnataka approves setting up of gaushalas in every district

  • The Karnataka government has approved setting up of gaushalas or cow shelters across the state as part of the anti-cattle slaughter law.
  • In February, the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill-2020 was passed amid huge commotion and opposition in the upper house of the state legislature.
  • The development comes even as the Karnataka high court continues to hear multiple petitions, challenging the bill that proposes to almost entirely stop cattle slaughter in a state.

Andhra Pradesh government notifies 10% EWS quota

  • The Andhra Pradesh government announced 10% reservation for the Kapu community and other Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) for appointments in the initial posts and services in State government.
  • Persons who are not covered under the existing scheme of reservations for SCs, STs and Socially and Educationally Backward Classes and whose gross annual family income is below ?8 lakh are to be identified as EWS for the benefit of reservation.
  • The income includes income from all sources i.e. salary, agriculture, business, profession etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application.

Veteran actress Surekha Sikri passes away

  • Three-time National Film Award-winning actress Surekha Sikri passed away. The veteran actress died of cardiac arrest at the age of 75.
  • Sikri who became a household name as Kalyani Devi in Balika Vadhu, had an illustrious career spanning over four decades.
  • Sikri made her debut in the 1978 political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka and went on to play supporting roles in numerous films.
  • Sikri won her first National Film Award in 1988 for her film Tamas. Her second National Award came in 1995 for Shyam Benegal's Mammo.
  • Thethird National Film Award for the 2018 comedy-drama Badhaai Ho, co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sanya Malhotra.

Former Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain passes away

  • Former president of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain passed on July 14, 2021, after a prolonged illness. He was 80.
  • Hussain was born in Agra in 1940 and migrated with his parents to Pakistan in 1947. He had served as the 12th President of Pakistan between September 2013 and September 2018.
  • He served as the governor of Sindh from June to October 1999 when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government was overthrown by the then Pakistan Army chief, Gen Pervez Musharraf.
