Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza

  • The Israeli air force launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip after militants in the Palestinian territory sent incendiary balloons into southern Israel.
  • The airstrikes and balloons marked the first major flare-up between Israel and Gaza since a ceasefire on May 21 ended 11 days of heavy fighting.
  • The flare-up comes after a march was conducted in East Jerusalem by Israeli nationalists that had drawn threats of action by Hamas, the ruling terrorist group in Gaza.

Veteran actor Chandrashekhar passes away

  • Yesteryear Bollywood actor Chandrashekhar passed away. He was 97. He was best known for playing Arya Sumant in the television series, ‘Ramayan’.
  • The senior actor appeared in about 250 films. His first film as a hero was ‘Surang’ which released in 1953. He essayed characters as the supporting actor in films like ‘Gateway of India’, ‘Fashion’ (1957), ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960) and others went on to become quite popular.
  • He also produced, directed and acted as the lead hero in his hit musical film ‘Cha ChaCha’ (1964), which was the first film of Helen in a lead role.
  • He also served as President of the Cine Artistes Association (CINTAA) from 1985 to 1996.

Taiwan reports incursion by Chinese forces

  • As many as 28 Chinese air force aircraft, including fighters and nuclear-capable bombers, entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ). It is the largest reported incursion to date.
  • The news comes after the Group of Seven leaders issued a joint statement criticising China and underscored the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
  • Taiwan has experienced repeated missions by China’s air force near its borders, concentrated in the south-western part of its air defence zone near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

World’s first wooden satellite to be launched from New Zealand

  • The European Space Agency (ESA) has planned to put the world’s first wooden satellite, WISA Woodsat, on Earth’s orbit by the end of this year.
  • The mission of the satellite is to test the applicability of wooden materials like plywood in spacecraft structures and expose it to extreme space conditions, such as heat, cold, vacuum and radiation, for an extended period of time.
  • It will be launched to space by the end of 2021 with a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from the Mahia Peninsula launch complex in New Zealand.
  • The satellite is designed and built in Finland will orbit at around 500-600 km altitude in a roughly polar Sun-synchronous orbit.

NATO leaders declare China a global security challenge

  • NATO leaders have declared China a constant security challenge and said the Chinese are working to undermine global order.
  • The warning to China comes as Biden has stepped up his effort to rally allies to speak in a more unified voice about China’s human rights record, its trade practices and its military’s increasingly assertive behaviour.
  • They called on Beijing to uphold its international commitments and to act responsibly in the international system.
