Violent stand-off with Chinese near LAC

  • The Indian Army has lost one officer and two soldiers in a violent faceoff with the Chinese army in the Galwan Valley.
  • Tensions between the two armies have been running high on the border since reports of a scuffle between the soldiers of both sides at Pangong Tso (eastern Ladakh) and Naku la (in Sikkim) came in early last month.
  • The last deaths on the India-China border were in 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by the Chinese soldiers on the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh.

Lockdown re-imposed in Tamil Nadu

  • Tamil Nadu government has announced an intense lockdown in Chennai and parts of three neighbouring districts for 12 days, beginning on June 19.
  • The chief minister announced some relaxations for certain essential services during the 12 days.They include hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies, ambulances and funeral hearse vans.
  • Rental auto, taxi and private vehicles will not be allowed. However, they will be allowed for emergency medical services.

91% of domestic workers not paid during lockdown in Bengaluru

  • As many as 91% of domestic workers were not paid salaries in April and 50% of workers, who were above the age of 50, lost their jobs, according to a survey conducted by Domestic Workers’ Rights Union (DWRU), Bruhat Bangalore Gruhakarmika Sangha (BBGS), and Manegelasa Kaarmikara Union.
  • According to an estimate, there are around four lakh domestic workers. Most of them are in deep trouble due to the prevailing situation.
  • Workers are demanding that all domestic workers, irrespective of the category, should be included in the social security net.

ICMR distances itself from study claiming peak in COVID-19 cases in November

  • The ICMR rejected a news report which attributed a study to the top medical body claiming that the peak stage of COVID-19 pandemic in India may arrive around mid-November.
  • PIB Fact Check, which counters misinformation on government policies and schemes, also rejected the report, saying it doesn't reflect the authentic information.
  • News agency PTI earlier today reported that the peak stage of COVID-19 in India has been delayed by the eight-week lockdown, and it may now arrive around mid-November when a paucity of isolation and ICU beds and ventilators can arise.

India and Pakistan boost their nuclear arsenal

  • The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a Swedish think tank that researches international armament and conflict, has updated the number of nuclear warheads in its latest yearbook.
  • India, along with both its nuclear-armed neighbours Pakistan and China, has increased its nuclear stockpile in the past year. Both China and Pakistan have a larger stockpile of nuclear weapons compared to India.
  • The nine nations that have nuclear weapons include the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. However, the report has not counted the North Korean numbers.
