Former underworld don Muthappa Rai dies

  • Former underworld don Muthappa Rai, 68, who had turned a social activist in the recent years passed away in Bengaluru.
  • He was elected chairperson of Karnataka Athletics Association in 2018. There has been no case against him alleging any criminal activity since he returned to India extradited from Dubai in 2002.
  • In 2008, Muthappa announced he was turning a new leaf and started to Kannada organisation "Jaya Karnataka".

Myanmar deports wanted insurgents to India

  • The 22 northeastern insurgents from six outfits flown out of Myanmar in a special flight have landed in India and have been handed over to the police in Manipur and Assam.
  • The 22 insurgents had been captured by Myanmar military during joint operations carried out a few months earlier along the borders of Myanmar’s Sagaing Region. The operations, codenamed “OperationSunshine”, had started in February and continued through March.
  • The insurgents had been extorting money from Indian personnel working on the $ 484 million Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project in Myanmar funded by India.

Jeff Bezos could become the first trillionaire

  • Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos could potentially become the worlds first trillionaire as early as 2026, at which point he will be aged 62, says a study.
  • Despite losing an estimated $38 billion as part of his recent divorce, Bezos is still by far the world’s richest person and his net worth has grown by 34% on average over the last five years.
  • India’s Mukesh Ambani could become a trillionaire in 2033 when he will be aged 75, according to the research which said that Chinese real estate tycoon Xu Jiayin will follow Bezos to become the second trillionaire in the world in 2027.

US to donate ventilators to India

  • The United States will donate ventilators to India to help it fight the coronavirus pandemic in the country, President Donald Trump has announced.
  • While the US has the highest number of novel coronavirus cases and deaths globally, India, with over 85,000 cases, has crossed China’s tally even as the death toll remains around 2,600.
  • Last month, Trump had warned India of retaliation if it does not supply the essential hydroxychloroquine drug to the US to treat COVID-19. India had subsequently revoked the export ban on HCQ and sent 29 million of the drug to the US.

IMD predicts delay in onset of monsoon

  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) said thee onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala this year is likely to be delayed by four days. The  monsoon is expected to hit the southern state by June 5.
  • The time of the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala does not influence its overall progress, distribution or quantum of rain over the ensuing monsoon months of June-September.
  • IMD uses an indigenously-developed statistical model with a model error of ±4 days to predict the onset date over the country.
