Malta's parliament set to approve cannabis for personal use

  • Malta became the first European country to allow limited cultivation and possession of cannabis for personal use.
  • Under the new legislative package, it will become legal for anyone 18 and over to possess up to 7 grams of cannabis and to cultivate up to four plants.
  • However, consuming cannabis in public or in the presence of minors remains illegal and subject to fines of up to 500 euros ($793).

Neena Gupta wins Ramanujan prize

  • Indian mathematician Neena Gupta has been awarded the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians, 2021.
  • Gupta, who is a faculty member of the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, was awarded the ‘2021 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from developing countries’ for exemplary work in geometry and commutative algebra.
  • She has become only the fourth Indian to win this award. The Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians is administered by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in association with the International Mathematical Union and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

NASA’s Parker solar probe enters Sun’s atmosphere

  • NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has successfully entered the corona of the Sun – an extreme environment that’s roughly 2 million degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The corona is the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere which hosts strong magnetic fields bind plasma.
  • The Probe will continue to orbit the Sun and take measurements and data for the scientists to better understand the solar atmosphere.

Leena Nair appointed chairman of Chanel

  • French fashion house Chanel named Leena Nair, an executive from Unilever, as its new global CEO, picking a consumer goods veteran to run one of the world’s biggest luxury goods groups.
  • Nair serves as a non-executive board member at BT and has previously served as non-executive director of the British government’s business, energy and industrial strategy department.
  • Chanel was founded in 1910 by fashion legend Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel as a hat boutique on rue Cambon in Paris and grew to become a byword for French chic.

Ladakh gets its first radio station

  • Ladakh got its first ever FM radio station in its capital city Leh. Advisor Ladakh, UmangNarula launched the first-ever Top FM radio in Leh.
  • The frequency for Leh&Kargil will be 91.1 FM and it will cover 50 kilometres aerial distance in radius.
  • FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting by means of frequency modulation (FM).
