Historian BabasahebPurandare passes away

  • Eminent historian and Padma Vibhushan awardee BalwantMoreshwarPurandare, popularly known as BabasahebPurandare, passed away aged 99.
  • Known by his moniker ‘Shivsahir’, Mr. Purandare is considered one of the pre-eminent authorities on Chhatrapati Shivaji.
  • Raja Shivchhatrapati, Mr. Purandare’s widely popular two-part, 900-page magnum opus on Shivaji in Marathi, was first published in the late 1950s and has since been a staple in Marathi households, going through numerous reprints over decades.

Russia starts delivery of S-400 missiles

  • Russia has started delivery of the much awaited S-400 missile system for deployment on schedule this year.
  • India had bought the system for over US$ 5 billion in 2018, in a deal that became contentious amid a threat of sanctions from the US on countries engaging in defence deals with Russia.
  • The S-400 is among the most advanced air-defence systems in the world, with a range of around 400 km. It is capable of protecting its air defence bubble against rockets, missiles, cruise missiles and even aircraft.

Author Wilbur Smith passes away

  • Internationally acclaimed author Wilbur Smith died at his home in South Africa  after a decades-long career in writing. He was 88.
  • Smith was born in today’s Zambia in 1933 to a British family. He grew up experiencing the forest, hills and savannah of Africa.
  • His 1964 debut novel “When the Lion Feeds”, the tale of a young man growing up on a South African cattle ranch, became an instant bestseller and led to 15 sequels.

Maoist leader MilindTeltumbde killed in encounter

  • MilindTeltumbde, a Central Committee member of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation, was among the 26 Maoists killed in encounter with security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchirolidistrict.
  • Teltumbde was in charge of the Maoist outfit’s Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh (MMC) zone.
  • He was also the younger brother of former IIT professor, Dalit intellectual and writer, AnandTeltumbde, who has been jailed in connection with the Elgar Parishad case.

  • Australia won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as Mitchell Marsh and David Warner hit half-centuries to chase down 173 with ease at the Dubai International Stadium.
  • Australia had every major limited-overs trophy in their decorated cabinet but they had to wait long for glory in the shortest format of the game.
  • Mitchell Marsh was named the player of the match for his winning contribution. David Warner was judged the player of the tournament for his scintillating batting display.
