Pakistan on verge of 'Dark Grey' list

  • Pakistan is on the verge of strong action by the international terror financing watchdog FATF and may be put in the 'Dark Grey' list.
  • The situation has arisen due to its inadequate performance, whereby it managed to pass in only six of 27 items needed to be FATF compliant.
  • This is the final intermediate stage between 'Grey' and 'Black' lists, referred to as 'Dark Grey'.
  • Dark Grey means issuance of a strong warning, so that the country concerned gets one last chance to improve.

Sourav Ganguly set to be elected BCCI president

  • Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, will take over as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on October 23.
  • On the last day of filing nomination, no other candidate has filed his/her candidature. This has made Ganguly to be elected unopposed.
  • Jay Shah is set to be the new Secretary of the BCCI while Arun Dhumal is going to be the board's new Treasurer. Brijesh Patel will be the IPL chairman.
  • Jayesh George will be the new Joint Secretary and Mahim Verma will be the Vice President.

Mizoram: State with highest HIV prevalence

  • Mizoram has become the state with highest HIV prevalence according to the data from regulatory authority that monitors HIV AIDS in the state.
  • According to latest figures received from Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), nine new cases of HIV positive are detected all over the state every day.
  • At 2.04 per cent, Mizoram recorded the highest HIV prevalence rate, followed by Manipur (1.43 per cent) and Nagaland (1.15 per cent).

Man Booker prize announced

  • Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo jointly won the 2019 Booker Prize  after judges ignored the convention by declaring a tie.
  • Atwoodwon for the book 'The Testament' and Evaristo won for her book'Girl, Woman,Other'.
  • Evaristo is the 1st black woman to win the Man Booker prize since its inception in 1969.

Increase in fake notes

  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said high quality fake currency notes have resurfaced in recent times.
  • The agency data has indicated the role of Pakistan as a major contributor of printing high quality fake notes.
  • The circulation of high quality currency was one of the six major emerging challenges cited by the NIA in its operation.
  • Fake notes affects country’s economy adversely by creating artificial inflation. The fake currencies are also used for financing terrorist activities in the country.
