SC asks centre to make appointments in tribunals

  • The Supreme Court asked the Centre to make appointments in two weeks in tribunals, which are facing a severe crunch of presiding officers as well as judicial and technical members.
  • A special bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice L Nageswara Rao expressed unhappiness with the government for the manner in which the recent appointments were made in the Tribunals.
  • The apex court gave the last opportunity to the government to make good appointments within two weeks and give reasons for rejecting recommended names.

Governor Gavin Newsom defeats recall efforts

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom handily beat back a Republican campaign to oust him from office, sending a decisive message that voters supported his policies for tackling COVID-19, immigration and crime.
  • Newsom, a first-term governor beset by challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme drought and severe wildfires, successfully boosted turnout among Democrats with a flurry of late campaigning.
  • The removal of Newsom would have set off alarms among Democrats, coming in one of the nation’s most liberal states just over a year before the 2022 elections that will decide control of Congress.

Russia fines Facebook and Twitter for not deleting banned content

  • A Russian court has fined U.S. social media giants Facebook and Twitter for failing to delete content that Moscow deems illegal.
  • Moscow wants foreign internet firms to open full-fledged offices in Russia and to store Russians’ personal data on its territory.
  • The government published plans to impose new taxes on foreign-owned digital services as part of a push to support its domestic tech sector.
  • Facebook has been handed five fines totalling 21 million roubles ($287,850). Twitter received two fines of a total 5 million roubles. Popular messaging app Telegram had been fined 9 million roubles.

Zomato co-founder Gaurav Gupta quits

  • One of home-grown food-delivery platform Zomato’s top executives Gaurav Gupta has decided to quit the company after six years.
  • Gupta joined Zomato six years ago in 2015 and was later elevated to the role of co-founder in 2019. He has also been instrumental in helping build Zomato’s premium membership subscription along with its advertising and sales.
  • Zomato become the first of a generation of Indian internet unicorns to tap India’s capital markets in July this year.

LasithMalinga retires from all forms of Cricket

  • Sri Lanka pace veteran LasithMalinga announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.The 38-year-old was captain of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup winning team.
  • Malinga has played a staggering 122 IPL matches. He has 170 wickets to his credit with the best bowling figures of 5/13.
  • He picked up 107 wickets in 84 T20 Internationals, 338 scalps in 226 ODIs and 101 wickets in 30 Tests. He had retired from Test and ODI cricket in January this year.
