UAE inaugurates embassy in Israel

  • The United Arab Emirates formally opened its embassy in Israel, inaugurating its diplomatic offices in Tel Aviv less than a year after the two countries announced they would establish open relations.
  • The Emirati embassy’s inauguration came two weeks after Israel cut the ribbon on its embassy in Abu Dhabi during Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s visit to the UAE in June.
  • Israel and the UAE formally established diplomatic relations last year after decades of clandestine ties.
  • The two countries signed the U.S.-brokered normalization agreement on the White House lawn in September, and a flurry of bilateral economic and cooperation deals in the months since.

Piyush Goyal appointed Leader of house in Rajya Sabha

  • Commerce and Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Former Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot had held that position.
  • Mr. Goyal had been deputy leader of the Rajya Sabha under Mr. Gehlot, and this is being seen as a promotion for him in terms of political responsibility, as the BJP and the NDA are not in majority in the House
  • Prior to becoming a minister in 2014, Goyal was the treasurer of the party. He was also engaged by the BJP in poll management activities and for managing logistics during the election.

Human case of H5N6 bird flu reported in Sichuan

  • China has confirmed one case of human infection with the H5N6 strain of bird flu in Sichuan province.
  • The male infected with the bird flu in Bazhong city had been sent to hospital and local authorities have culled poultry in the vicinity.
  • Experts believe that the infection was an occasional case and the risk of an invisible epidemic is extremely low.
  • In February, Russian officials reported the H5N8 strain of bird flu had been passed on from birds to humans for the first time, leading to seven people becoming sick at a poultry plant.

Subsidy scheme for shipping firms

  • The union cabinet has cleared a scheme for the shipping industry that will allow ships that are registered in India to obtain a 10% subsidy when they bid for cargo that is being imported by public sector undertakings.
  • As per the scheme, the government of India will discount a bid by an India-registered ship by 10% in order to make it more competitive against a bid from a foreign-registered ship for transporting the same cargo.
  • Industry experts pointed that the scheme will have multiple benefits for Indian shipping companies that operate ships registered locally including creation of employment opportunities for Indian seafarers and enhancement of investor interest in the domestic shipping sector.

India and Russia to hold 2+2 ministerial meeting

  • India and Russia will hold the first 2+2 ministerial meeting later this year before a summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • Both the countries have a mechanism under which India's prime minister and the Russian president hold a summit meeting annually to review the ties.
  • India and Russia are currently engaged in cooperation in areas such as  and hydrocarbon energy, defence, space, industry, trade, finance, connectivity, innovations and technology sharing, healthcare, education.
