Supreme court squashes criminal case against Italian marines

  • The Supreme Court has ordered the closure of proceedings in India against two Italian marines, accused of killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in February 2012.
  • The Supreme Court had earlier said that ? 4 crore each out of the compensation will go to the next of kin of the two fishermen while ? 2 crore will be given to the owner of the fishing vessel in which they were travelling.
  • On February 15, 2012, two Indian fishermen returning from a fishing expedition near Lakshadweep islands on-board fishing vessel St Antony were gunned down by two Italian marines on board oil tanker Enrica Lexie.

Shenzhou-12 to be China’s latest manned mission

  • A Chinese spacecraft will blast off from the Gobi Desert on a Long March rocket in the coming days, ferrying three men to an orbiting space module for a three-month stay.
  • Shenzhou-12, meaning "Divine Vessel", will be the third of 11 missions needed to complete China's space station by 2022.
  • Chinese astronauts have had a relatively low international profile. A U.S. law banning NASA from any connection with China means its astronauts have not been to the more than two-decade-old International Space Station.

Kannada actor Sanchari Vijay passes away

  • National Award-winning actor Sanchari Vijay breathed his last on June 14. He was hospitalised after meeting with a road accident.
  • Sanchari Vijay made his debut with the film Rangappa Hogbitna in 2011. He rose to fame with the film Naanu Avanalla Avalu, which also fetched him his first National Award.
  • He has appeared in a slew of Kannada films including Dasavala, Harivu, Oggarane, Killing Veerappan, Varthamana and Sipaayi among others.

Retail inflation at six month high

  • India’s retail inflation raced to 6.3% in May, breaching the upper limit of the central bank’s inflation target for the first time in six months.
  • The jump in retail inflation was primarily on account of rising food and fuel prices. However, the central bank is expected to look through the rising retail price pressure.
  • Wholesale price inflation also jumped to a fresh 11-year-high of 12.94% in May, having breached double digits in April on the back of rising global commodity prices.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) targets the 2-6% range only for retail inflation and may overlook the Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation.
