India sails into finals of Thomas Cup

  • The Indian Men’s Badminton Team created history by reaching the final of the Thomas Cup, courtesy of a 3-2 victory over Denmark.
  • HS Prannoy won the pivotal fifth set against World No. 13 RasmusGemke to break the 2-2 tie and assist India in reaching their maiden final in the competition’s history.
  • India will take 14-time champions and holders Indonesia in the final. India have only won a bronze medal in 1979.

India bans export of Wheat

  • The government has put a curb on the wheat export by putting it under the “prohibited” category.
  • This is being done to manage overall food security of the country and support the need of the neighbouring and vulnerable nations.
  • Exports will also be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the Government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed passes away

  • United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away. He was also ruler of Abu Dhabi emirate.
  • Under the constitution, vice-president and premier Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, will act as president until the federal council elects a new president.
  • Khalifa came to power in 2004 in the richest emirate Abu Dhabi and became the head of state. He is expected to be succeeded as ruler of Abu Dhabi by his half-brother Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

Swiggy to acquire Dineout

  • Swiggy had reached a definitive agreement with the Indian conglomerate Times Internet to acquire Dineout, a popular dining out and restaurant tech platform.
  • Best known for its dining out table reservations and events service, Dineout has built a network of over 50,000 restaurant partners in the country.
  • The startup makes money by selling annual memberships to restaurants and customers and through its billing payments solution.

Brendon McCullum appointed England cricket team coach

  • Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was appointed the new head coach of the England men’s cricket team in Test cricket.
  • McCullum has been coaching Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL for the past few seasons. He previously coached Trinbago Knight Riders.
  • He has played 101 Tests for New Zealand scoring 6453 runs at 38.64 from 2004 to 2016. He will be tasked with working alongside newly-appointed test captain Ben Stokes.
