‘Ghost ancestors' of humans

  • Scientists examining the genomes of West Africans have detected signs that a mysterious extinct human species interbred with our own species tens of thousands of years ago in Africa.
  • The study indicated that present-day West Africans trace a substantial proportion, some 2 percent to 19 percent, of their genetic ancestry to an extinct human species - what the researchers called a "ghost population.
  • Previous genetic research showed that our species interbred with both the Neanderthals and Denisovans, with modern human populations outside of Africa still carrying DNA from both.

Manchester City banned for two seasons from European competition

  • Manchester City have been banned from European competitions for the next two seasons for "serious financial fair-play breaches".
  • City, who was also fined 30 million euros ($32.5 million), announced they were appealing the suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) at the earliest opportunity.

Ramayana themed train planned by Railways

  • The Railways plans to run a new train, Ramayana Express, with Ramayana-themed interiors and religious songs playing on board to give the passengers a feeling of traveling in a temple.
  • The train will originate from different locations, north, south, east and west, so that people from across the country can avail its services.
  • The railways already runs ‘Shri Ramayana Express’ that was introduced in November 2018 to cover important destinations related to the epic.

Bhawna Jat books Tokyo Olympics berth in 20km walk

  • Bhawna Jat broke the national record in the 20 km race walk event at the 7th National Race Walk Championships in Ranchi.
  • She also earned a berth in Tokyo 2020 by finishing the race ahead of the automatic Olympic qualification mark of 1:29:54.
  • Bhawna is India’s second race walker to book a ticket to Tokyo. KT Irfan earned his berth in the men’s race walk event in May last year.

PAN card set to be inoperative if not linked with Aadhar

  • The Permanent Account Number (PAN) will become inoperative if it is not linked with Aadhaar by March 31, 2020, the Income Tax department has said.
  • The deadline for linking of PAN and Aadhar has been extended several times and the current deadline ends on March 31, 2020.
  • The notification further said that persons whose PANs become inoperative shall be liable for all the consequences under the I-T Act for not furnishing, intimating or quoting the permanent account number.
