CORAS: Indian Railways gets Commando Unit

  • Railways Minister Piyush Goyal has inducted the Commando for Railway Security (CORAS), to be deployed for protecting railway assets and passengers.
  • The minister has also promised to set up a commando training centre in Haryana to modernize and train commandos of Railway Protection Force (RPF).
  • The CORAS commandos will be posted in Left extremist wing affected area, northern region and Jammu and Kashmir.

Massive fire breaks out on Greek Island

  • Massive wildfire has broken out in Mediterranean Nation of Greece.
  • The fires have been reported on the Island of Evia, Greece’s Second-largest island, north of Athens.
  • Although wildfires are common during this part of year, the intensity of occurrence show symptoms of man-made global warming as a possible reason.

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman to be conferred with Vir Chakra

  • Wg Cdr Abhinandan Varthaman will be conferred with Vir chakra, India’s third highest wartime medal, on Independence Day.
  • Vir Chakra is the third highest gallantry medal after Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra in War-time.
  • Abhinandan was involved in a faceoff with Pakistani Air force which resulted in him downing a Pakistani aircraft before getting himself hit and held hostage in Pakistan for 3 days and subsequently returning back.

Deepak Punia wins World Championship

  • Deepak Punia has won a gold medal in Junior world championship held in Tallinn, Estonia thereby becoming 1st Indian in 18 years  to win junior championship.
  • The last Indians to emerge world championship were Ramesh Kumar (69 kg) and Palwinder Singh Cheema (130kg) in 2001.

Deshbhakti curriculum to be introduced in Delhi Schools

  • Delhi Government has issued intention to introduce Deshbhakti curriculum in its schools from 2020.
  • The aim of the curriculum is to inculcate love for the country in students and make them aware of their responsibilities.
  • Delhi government schools already have ‘Happiness curriculum’ in their academic structure since 2018, aimed at making young minds content, happy, confident and to develop their personality.
