Government convenes all-party meeting ahead of Monsoon session

  • The government has convened an all-party meeting on July 18 ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
  • Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has invited leaders of political parties for the meeting in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be present.
  • Such meets are convened to ensure smooth functioning of the House during the session. The Monsoon session begins on July 19 and would conclude on August 13.

Indian-American doctors nominated to key positions

  • U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated a prominent Indian-American physician and a surgeon to serve in key roles in his administration.
  • West Virginia’s former Health Commissioner Dr. Rahul Gupta was nominated on July 13 as the next Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
  • Atul Gawande, a surgeon and popular author, was nominated for Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development.
  • Dr. Gupta previously served under two Governors as the Health Commissioner of West Virginia.Dr. Gupta also led the development of the state’s Zika action plan and its preparedness efforts during the Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak.

Zomato raises Rs 4,196 crore from anchor investors

  • Food delivery platform Zomato has raised ?4,196 crore from anchor investors ahead of its initial share sale, which opens for public subscription.
  • The company has decided to allocate 5,52,173,505 equity shares to anchor investors at ?76 apiece, aggregating the transaction size to ?4,196.51 crore.
  • The online food delivery segment has seen significant growth in the last few years with Zomato and Swiggy competing head on to grab market share.
  • In February, Zomato had raised $250 million (over ?1,800 crore) in funding from Tiger Global, Kora and others, valuing the online food ordering platform at ?5.4 billion.

Sher Bahadur Deuba takes oath as Nepal Prime minister

  • Sher Bahadur Deuba took oath as the Prime Minister of Nepal after the country’s Supreme Court's order. Deuba is the president of the Nepali Congress, was sworn in as Prime Minister for the fifth time.
  • A five-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court, in its order on Monday, had said that Deuba must be appointed the Prime Minister in line with Article 76(5) of the Constitution.
  • As per Article 76(5), any member of the House who presents a ground on which she/he can garner a vote of confidence in the House gets appointed as PM.

Ayurveda expert PK Warrier passes away

  • Doyen of Ayurveda and managing trustee of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala (KAS) Dr PK Warrier passed away in Malappuram, Kerala. He was 100.
  • In his lifetime spanning a century, he treated tens of thousands of patients from across the globe and his patients included former presidents and former prime ministers of India and abroad.
  • The country had honoured him with Padmashri in 1999 and Padma Bhushan in 2010.He has many an honorific degree in his credit, including a Doctor of Medicine award from the University of Copenhagen.
