Vinoo Mankad and Kumar Sangakkara induced into ICC Hall of Fame

  • Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, India great Vinoo Mankad, West Indies legend Desmond Haynes and Zimbabwe's Andy Flower were among the 10 cricket icons who were inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
  • The ICC added two players each from five eras, dating back to cricket's early days in the special edition of inductees. Andy Flower became the first Zimbabwe cricketer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
  • Considered one of India's greatest-ever all-rounders, Mankad played 44 Tests, scored 2,109 runs at 31.47, took 162 wickets at 32.32. He was an opening batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler.

Megha Rajagopalan wins Pulitzer prize

  • Megha Rajagopalan has won the Pulitzer Prize for innovative investigative reports that exposed a vast infrastructure of prisons and mass internment camps secretly built by China for detaining hundreds of thousands of Muslims in its restive Xinjiang region.
  • Tampa Bay Times’ Neil Bedi won for local reporting. Ms. Bedi has been awarded the prize for the series exposing a Sheriff’s Office initiative that used computer modelling to identify people believed to be future crime suspects.
  • In 2017, not long after China began to detain thousands of Muslims in Xinjiang, Rajagopalan was the first to visit an internment camp — at a time when China denied that such places existed.

Women to be appointed as priests in Tamil Nadu temples

  • Temples in Tamil Nadu may soon get women priests as the state Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR&CE) department has planned to offer archakar (priest) course to all Hindus.
  • The state would offer training to women who are interested in becoming priests in temples managed by the department.
  • In 2008, the Madras High Court had in an order allowed a women priest to conduct pujas in a temple after her father, a priest, died.

Naftali Bennett elected Prime Minister of Israel

  • Benjamin Netanyahu lost his 12-year-old grip on power as the Knesset approved Naftali Bennett as Israel’s new Prime Minister.
  • Netanyahu is on trial for fraud, and he fell short of obtaining majority support after the general election in March this year.
  • The new Prime Minister is a former aide to Netanyahu and is considered to the right of the outgoing leader.
  • The centrist Yair Lapid will replace Bennett as PM after two years, if their fragile government survives till then.

New tree of coffee family discovered in Andaman and Nicobar

  • A tree that belongs to the genus of the coffee family has recently been discovered from the Andaman Islands by a team of researchers from India and the Philippines.
  • The new species, Pyrostria laljii, is also the first record of the genus Pyrostria in India. Plants belonging to genus Pyrostria are usually found in Madagascar but the recently discovered species is new to science.
  • The tree is distinguished by a long stemand was first reported from South Andaman’s Wandoor forest. The other places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands where the tree could be located are the Tirur forest near the Jarawa Rerserve Forest and the Chidia Tapu (Munda Pahar) forest.
  • Pyrostrialaljii has been assessed as ‘Critically Endangered’ based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List criteria.
