Tesla suspends vehicle buying using Bitcoin

  • Electric carmaker Tesla will no longer accept Bitcoin for car purchases, stating concerns about emissions due to use of fossil fuels to mine the cryptocurrency.
  • Tesla began accepting the world’s most-traded digital currency as payment in February. Prior to the move, the EV maker bought Bitcoin worth $1.5 billion.
  • The company’s decision was criticised by environmentalists as they saw Tesla’s move could turbo-charge the global use of cryptocurrencies.
  • They view that mining cryptocurrency caused pollution as it used fossil fuel to mint Bitcoin. Musk faced severe backlash for supporting Bitcoin, despite projecting himself as an evangelist for clean energy.

Ramesh Powar appointed as Head Coach of women’s team

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar as the head coach of Indian Women’s Cricket Team.
  • Powar had represented India in 2 Tests and 31 ODIs. After his playing career, he took up cricket coaching and is an ECB Level 2 certified coach. He has also attended the BCCI-NCA Level 2 coaching course.
  • He recently coached the Mumbai senior team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has also worked at the National Cricket Academy as a Bowling Coach.

Israel-Palestine fighting escalates

  • Despite global alarm and diplomatic efforts to halt the spiralling violence, hundreds of rockets again tore through the skies over the Gaza Strip overnight.
  • Israel’s Air Force launched multiple strikes with fighter jets, targeting what it described as locations linked to Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza.
  • Recent days have seen the most violent escalation in seven years between Israel and Gaza’s armed groups, triggered by weekend unrest at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

Tamil War memorial found vandalised

  • A new memorial plaque for Tamils killed in Sri Lanka’s civil war, along with monuments erected earlier, were found vandalised in the northern Mullaitivu district.
  • The Mullivaikkal war remembrance committee voiced concern over the continuing attack on Tamils’ right to memorialisation. The army denied involvement in the incident.
  • In the brutal final battle of the civil war in May 2009, tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were trapped and killed in Mullivaikkal, located along the north-eastern coast of the island.
  • This is not the first instance of Tamils’ war memorial being destroyed overnight. Rights groups in Sri Lanka, international watchdogs, and the UN have repeatedly highlighted the denial of Tamils’ right to remember.

Former AAP MLA Jarnaii Singh passes away

  • Former Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jarnail Singh passed away after contracting Covid in the last week of April.
  • Singh contested and won the 2015 Assembly elections from Rajouri Garden. He, however, resigned in 2017 and contested from the Lambi seat in Punjab. He had also contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from West Delhi, but lost.
  • He was suspended from the party in 2020 for sharing a Facebook post which allegedly disrespected Hindu goddesses.
