Elon Musk offers to buy Twitter

  • Billionaire Elon Musk has offered to buy Twitter for about $41 billion, just days after rejecting a seat on the social media company’s board.
  • Shares of Twitter have seesawed in recent weeks amid the news from Musk, but are up 6% this year and 18.5% since the start of the month.
  • Musk had abandoned a plan to join Twitter’s board, just as his tenure was about to start. Taking the board seat would have prevented him from a possible takeover of the company.

Former PM Imran Khan may face treason charges

  • The provisions of Pakistan's constitution that the former Prime Minister Imran Khan sought to use against his opponents might be the reason for possible charges of treason against him.
  • Though one of these petitions was rejected, Khan is still in jeopardy depending on the results of other petitions still pending in the courts.
  • The relevant constitutional provisions filed against Imran Khan include Article 5(1) under which “loyalty to the state and obedience to the constitution and law” is an inviolable obligation of every citizen.

US approves $800 million military assistance to Ukraine

  • In anticipation of a new Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine, President Joe Biden has approved an $800 million package of military assistance, including additional helicopters and American artillery.
  • The Ukrainians also will receive armoured personnel carriers, armoured Humvees, naval drone vessels used in coastal defence, and gear and equipment used to protect soldiers in chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological attacks.
  • This is part of U.S. security assistance packages valued at a combined $2.6 billion that has been committed to Ukraine since Russia invaded on Feb. 24.

Monsoon to remain normal this year

  • India is likely to witness normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season this year, according to the India Meteorological Department.
  • Rainfall will be 96 per cent to 104 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) of 87 cm of the 1971-2020 period.
  • Normal to above-normal rainfall is most likely over many areas in the northern part of peninsular India, central India, along the foothills of the Himalayas and some parts of northwest India.

UN recognises Mumbai and Hyderabad as “tree city of the world”

  • Mumbai and Hyderabad have been recognised as the “2021 Tree City of the World” by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (UN) jointly with Arbor Day Foundation.
  • While Mumbai has made the list for the first time, Hyderabad has featured on it for the second consecutive year.
  • It is an international effort “to recognise cities and towns committed to ensuring that their urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed, and duly celebrated”.
