Congress MP moves bill to implement two child norms

  • Congress party's senior leader and an incumbent Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Manu Singhvi is set to move a private member Bill in the Parliament, proposing enforcement of two-child policy across the nation.
  • Singhvi has received President Ram Nath Kovind's permission to table The Population Control Bill, 2020. The permission was necessary given the bill has monetary implications as it proposes to enforce the two-child norm through incentives and disincentives.
  • The bill calls for providing financial incentives to couples adhering to the two-child norm, setting up of a National Population Stabilisation Fund by the central government and ensuring the availability of contraceptives at reasonable rates at all-sub health centres.

BCCI postpones IPL

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) till April 15th amid Coronavirus outbreak.
  • The 2020 edition was scheduled to be played between March 29th and May 24th.
  • BCCI’s decision will put to rest the speculations and uncertainty around the league for a while and allow the board time to take more informed decision on format, venues etc.
  • Some of the options under consideration are hosting matches in limited venues in non-infected states, so as to limit travel, and closed-door matches.

Farooq Abdullah released from detention

  • J&K administration has released veteran politician Farooq Abdullah seven months after he was detained following the revocation of special status.
  • The 82-year-old leader is among the top mainstream leaders, a three-time chief minister and sitting parliamentarian, who was detained on August 5.
  • The revocation of Abdullah's detention order under Public Safety Act (PSA), a law under which a person can be detained for up to two years without bail, was issued by Kashmir's principal home secretary.

Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board

  • The billionaire and his wife Melinda run one of the world's largest charities, the Gates Foundation, which has billions in assets and funds global health programmes to combat disease and poverty.
  • Gates quit his full-time executive role at Microsoft in 2008 and remained as chairman of the board till 2014. Since then he has been a board member.
