Delhi Government constitutes Jasmine Shah committee for education reforms

  • Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) of Delhi Government has constituted 17-member high-level committee to reform higher education in the national capital.
  • It will be chaired by DDC vice-chairperson Jasmine Shah. It will recommend, policies, goals, metrics and actionable plans for reforming higher education system in Delhi within a year.
  • DDC is premier think-tank of Delhi Government which advises on key policy issues.  Nalanda 2.0, a non-profit policy think tank is its knowledge partner in this initiative.

M R Kumar appointed as Chairman of LIC

  • Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has been appointed M R Kumar as new Chairman of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
  • He will have tenure of five years. Prior to this post, he was Zonal Manager (in-charge) of North Zone.
  • He was recommended for appointment by Banks Board Bureau (BBB). This was for first time that the BBB since its inception in 2014 by was involved in selecting top official of LIC.
  • LIC is the largest insurance company in India. It was founded in 1956 and is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 begins in Abu Dhabi

  • Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 has started at Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. It is for first time held in West Asia (Middle East).
  • It is a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities in tradition of the Special Olympics movement.
  • It will see participation of record 200 nations of which 195 will compete in the Games and five will observe.
  • In this edition of games, over 7,500 athletes will take part in 24 Olympic-style sports. It will also highest number of women.

Stephen Hawking: UK release commemorative coins on black holes

  • United Kingdom’s Royal Mint has recently issued new commemorative 50 pence coin on black holes inspired by works late legendary British physicist Stephen Hawking.
  • It has been designed by British engraver and printmaker Edwina Ellis. Its purpose is to celebrate life and ground-breaking achievements of Hawking, who passed away in 2018.
  • With this, Hawking joined elite group of scientists having appeared on coins in UK including Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

Bengaluru to host 4th IoT India Congress 2019

  • The 4th edition of Internet of Things (IoT) India Congress 2019 is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru, capital of Karnataka from August 22 to 23, 2019.
  • It is being organized by Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) IoT Panel. It will see digital technology leaders converge to discuss and explore business opportunities in mainstreaming IoT.
  • It will include discussions on segments such as healthcare, telecom, energy, smart cities, cyber security, manufacturing, retail, skills and development, IoT Standards, legal and regulatory, and agriculture.
  • It will also host live zones and hackathons where people can touch, feel and experience IoT and solve sector-specific challenges.

Upamanyu Dutta wins bronze medal at Asian Open Laser Sailing Championship

  • Indian Sailor Upamanyu Dutta won bronze medal in Laser Standard race for men in Asian Open Laser Sailing Championship held in Singapore.
  • It was India's first ever medal in competitive single handed Laser Standard Category. 
  • India’s another sailor Nethra Kumanan was placed at 4th position in Laser Radial event for women.
