SBI cuts GDP projection to 5% for FY 2020

  • GDP growth in the current financial year could be just 5% according to a research report by State Bank of India (SBI).
  • This is a sharp cut from the earlier projection of 6.1% for fiscal 2019-20. The second quarter GDP number, scheduled to be announced at the end of this month, could fall to 4.2%, according to the report.
  • The further lowering on GDP growth has raised expectation of larger rate cuts by Reserve Bank of India in the December meeting of the monetary policy committee.

Hyderabad tops in drunk driving deaths

  • Hyderabad has recorded the highest number of drunk driving deaths among 53 urban areas, according to data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2016.
  • The city recorded 89 deaths out of 335 in urban areas nationally, which is 26.5% of the total deaths recorded. NCRB data is collected from the States for its annual report which gives a national perspective.
  • In 2015, Telangana accounted for 8.6% of the road accident fatalities nationally owing to tipplers being behind the wheels.
  • In 2016, the number spiked to 16.4% making the State rank right behind Jharkhand(17%).

Western ghats still the hub of butterflies

  • The Western Ghats is still home to a variety of butterflies. A survey that ended in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS)  could sight 191 species, 12 of which are endemic to the biodiversity-rich region.
  • The first-time sighting of Silver forget me not, Common three ring, and Brown onyx was also recorded. The sighting of Silver forget me not was reported only from the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki district of the State.
  • The three-day survey was done jointly by the Forest and Wildlife Department in association with the Ferns Nature Conservation Society (FNCS).
  • The survey was mainly aimed at assessing the butterfly diversity in the forest areas of the region, which is vulnerable to climatic changes.

Supreme court upholds disqualification of Karnataka MLAs

  • The Supreme Court has upheld the disqualification of 17 MLAs of Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in Karnataka but struck down a portion of the then Speaker's order that barred them from contesting elections during the tenure of the current Assembly, which is until 2023.
  • The court also said that under existing Constitutional mandate, Speaker is not empowered to disqualify any member till the end of the term.
  • With the SC ruling, the disqualified MLAs can now contest the forthcoming bypolls, which is scheduled to be held on December 5.

US-India disaster relief exercise

  • The maiden India US joint tri-services Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise named ‘Tiger Triumph’ is scheduled on the Eastern seaboard from November 13 to 21.
  • The exercise is aimed at developing interoperability for conducting HADR operations.
  • At the HADR exercise area, a Joint Command and Control Centre, would be established by the Indian Army and US Marines.
