Tamil Nadu assembly passes bill to make NEET not applicable to the state

  • The Tamil Nadu assembly passed a Bill for admissions to undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, Indian medicine and homeopathy on the basis of marks obtained by students in Class 12 board examinations.
  • The Bill also provides for 7.5% horizontal reservation for the students of government schools in medical admission.
  • A high-level committee led by Justice A K Rajan, set up by the DMK government in June, reported to the government that NEET had undermined the diverse societal representation in MBBS and higher medical education, favouring the affluent groups.
  • The committee said the NEET did not seem to ensure merit nor standard of the students being offered MBBS under its purview.

Daniil Medvedev wins US open

  • Daniil Medvedev shattered Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam dream with a straight sets victory in the US Open final, denying the world number one a record-breaking 21st major men’s singles title.
  • Russia’s second-ranked Medvedev dominated Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to prevent the first calendar-year Grand Slam since 1969 and keep Djokovic level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal atop the career Slam title list.
  • Djokovic’s bid to sweep the US, French and Australian Opens and Wimbledon in the same year for the first time since Rod Laver did it 52 years ago collapsed at the last hurdle.

Malayalam actor Rizabawa passes away

  • Prominent Malayalam actor Rizabawa, known for essaying a mix of humane character roles and later powerful villain roles in the 90s, passed away. He was 55.
  • Rizabawa took to acting through plays in his youth and later landed a role in the film ‘Vishupakshi’ in 1984.
  • The actor delivered key performances in films like Champakulam Thachan (1992), Kabuliwala (1993), BandhukalShatrukal (1993), EzhupunnaTharakan (1999), Nerariyan CBI (2005) and The King and the Commissioner (2012).
  • He was also a prolific dubbing artist, winning the Kerala state award in 2010 for his work in the film ‘Karmayogi.

Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes passes away

  • Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes passed away after suffering internal injuries during a fall.
  • Fernandes was the Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways in the Manmohan Singh-led government.
  • He was also the chairman of the Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
  • He was also the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during the late 1980s and the AICC joint secretary in 1983.
  • Apart from political activities, he also founded the ‘Jolly Club’ NGO where he had arranged a library room facility for youths to cultivate their reading habits.
  • Fernandes was also a trained performer of Yakshagana, the traditional art form of coastal Karnataka.

Bhupendra Patel takes oath as Gujarat Chief Minister

  • Gujarat BJP MLA Bhupendra Patel has been sworn-in as the 17th chief minister of Gujarat. Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath of office.
  • Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had resigned as the chief minister. Bhupendra Patel, who is a first time MLA from the Ghatlodia constituency in Ahmedabad, won the 2017 Gujarat assembly election with over 1.17 lakh votes.
  • The new Gujarat chief minister has served as the Ahmedabad municipal councillor. He was also the Standing Committee chairperson of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority chairperson.
