Nuclear capable ballistic missile tested by Pakistan

  • Pakistan has successfully test-fired a nuclear capable surface to surface ballistic missile which can strike targets up to 290 kilometres,
  • The successful training launch of ballistic missile Ghaznavi was aimed at ensuring operational readiness of army strategic forces command, besides re-validating technical parameters of the weapon system.
  • President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, chairman joint chiefs of staff committee and the service chiefs have congratulated all ranks of army strategic forces command.

India and Australia to soon hold 2+2 meeting

  • India and Australia are expected to hold the first minister-level “2 plus 2” meeting in September.
  • The maiden meeting between the Foreign and Defence Ministers is part of the bilateral plan to upgrade Secretary-level “2 plus 2” interactions.
  • Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defence Minister Peter Dutton are expected to visit India and Indonesia in September after holding talks with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary General Lloyd Austin.

Retail inflation eases to 5.6%

  • Retail inflation cooled slightly to 5.6% in July, slipping below the central bank’s upper tolerance threshold of 6% for the first time in three months.
  • Food prices at the consumer level played a substantive role in moderating the pace of price rise in July, with the National Statistical Office (NSO) estimating an inflation of 3.96%, compared to 5.15% in June.
  • Vegetables, fruits, oils and fats, pulses, sugar and spices experienced significant tempering in inflation, an indication that some of the government measures to correct edible oil and pulses prices are kicking in.

Afghan government offers power sharing deal to Taliban

  • The negotiators representing the Afghan government in Qatar have offered the Taliban a power-sharing deal in an attempt to end the violence in the war-torn region.
  • The Taliban has been reluctant to strike a political settlement with the Afghan government and other regional stakeholders since the US-led troops finalised their withdrawal from the region.
  • The Taliban fighters have intensified their offensive against Afghan security forces as they make rapid gains in the region.
  • The Islamist fundamentalist group has taken control of 10 provincial capital so far and the US has reportedly expressed concerns that Kabul may fall to militants within three months.

Indore becomes India’s first water plus city

  • Indore, India’s cleanest city, has now been declared as the country’s first ‘water plus’ city under the Swachh Survekshan 2021.
  • Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • Besides getting the ‘water plus’ tag, Indore has been named as India’s cleanest city for the fourth time in a row.
