Anup Purohit appointed CIO of Wipro

  • Wipro appointed Anup Purohit as chief information officer. He would report to Sanjeev Singh, chief operations officer.
  • Prior to the current role, Mr. Purohit served as CIO at Yes Bank and was in charge of spearheading business technology transformation and digital innovation strategy for the bank.
  • He also worked with financial institutions such as RBL, Barclays and JPMC in leadership roles. Even in his previous roles he has been focused on building agile, robust, scalable and resilient technology platforms and processes.

China-Sri Lanka friendship hospital opens

  • President Gotabaya Rajapaksa inaugurated the China-Sri Lanka Friendship Hospital in Polonnaruwa, built with a Chinese grant of $ 60 million.
  • The hospital is located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province and will specialise in treating kidney ailments, a widely prevalent and recurring concern in the region, especially among farmers.
  • In addition to sanctioning loans and a currency swap facility worth more than $ 2 billion since the pandemic struck last year, China also announced $90 million grant to Sri Lanka in October last year.

G7 to pledge 1bn vaccines for world

  • Leaders of the G7 economies convening in the UK will announce a pledge to provide 1bn coronavirus vaccine doses to poorer countries as part of a plan to “vaccinate the world” by the end of 2022.
  • The move is designed to address criticism that western governments have secured the bulk of life-saving Covid-19 vaccines to immunise their own populations.
  • The vow is also an attempt to counter “vaccine diplomacy” by Beijing and Moscow, which have been quick to sell their jabs to developing nations.

Sunita Narain appointed to Climate Action Group

  • Noted environmentalist Sunita Narain has been appointed to an international advisory group for climate action by Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation.
  • The group aims to further strengthen Swedish government’s attempts to address climate change and conserve biodiversity.
  • It has international experts who provide a deep commitment and knowledge in the field, which is very important as strong global action on these issues is needed which will help in sustainable and equitable development.

Kannada poet Siddalingaiah passes away

  • Dr. Siddalingaiah, one of the prominent Dalit voices of Karnataka and one of the co-founders of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, passed away. He was 67.
  • He emerged as the fiery voice of the Dalit world in Kannada with his debut poetry collection Hole Madigara Hadu in 1975.
  • Dr. Siddalingaiah taught Kannada at Bangalore University. He was nominated as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council for a term in 1980s.
  • He was awarded Pampa Award, the highest literary award of the State, in 2019, Rajyotsava Award in 1986, and he chaired the 81st Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Shravanabelagola in 2015.
