Govt plans to raise $84 billion from airwaves auction in 2019

  • Central Government is planning to raise around $83.8 billion (Rs 5.83 trillion rupees) from its latest round of airwaves auction in 2019.
  • This will be achieved by selling 8,600 megahertz (MHz) of telecom airwaves across multiple frequency bands.
  • Earlier in 2016-17, Government had raised Rs 65,789 crore in the airwaves auction. Government also has announced the debut auction of fifth-generation (5G) spectrum this year along with trials within 100 days.

Australia and Qatar to be guest nations at 2020 Copa America

Australia and Qatar will be two guest nations at the 2020 Copa America. Qatar will also return to 2020 tournament, which will be co-hosted by Argentina and Colombia. Qatar and Japan are guest nations in 2019 Copa, which will be held in Brazil. Copa America is men's international football tournament contested between national teams from CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation). It was founded in 1916.

India ranked 101st in the latest FIFA Rankings

  • India’s men’s football team remained static at 101st position in the latest FIFA rankings.  It was ranked 18th spot among the Asian countries.
  • Belgium topped the overall FIFA world rankings, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Portugal. Iran was only Asian country to feature in the top 20 and was ranked at the 20th rank.

Chandrayaan-2: 2 female scientists to head India’s 2nd Moon mission

  • For the first time two women scientists - Ritu Karidhal and Muthayya Vanitha were appointed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to head India's second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2.
  • Ritu Karidhal was appointed as mission director and Muthayya Vanitha as project director. Besides,close to 30% of the ISRO team working on Chandrayaan 2 are women.
  • Ritu Karidhal is referred as 'Rocket Woman of India'. She was deputy operations director for launch of Mars Orbiter Mission.
  • Muthayya Vanitha: She had received the Best Woman Scientist award in 2006 by the Astronomical Society of India.

India’s trade deficit widens to US $15.36 bn in May 2019

  • According to Union Ministry of Commerce, India’s trade deficit has expanded to six-month high of $15.4 billion in May 2019.
  • During this time, India's exports grew by 3.93% in May to $30 billion on the back of healthy growth in electronics and chemicals shipments.
  • Imports increased by 4.31% to $45.35 billion as crude oil and gold shipments shot up in May 2019.
  • Sectors which recorded healthy export growth included electronics (51%), engineering (4.4%), chemicals (20.64%), pharma (11%) and tea (24.3%).
  • Oil imports grew by 8.23% to $12.44 billion and non-oil imports expanded by 2.9%. Gold imports jumped by 37.43% to $4.78 billion in May 2019.
