IAF tests extended BrahMos range missile

  • Two months after the extended-range BrahMos missile was tested from a naval ship, the missile was air-launched from a Su-30 MKI aircraft.
  • The “extended range’ version means the missile can travel a distance farther than 300 km.
  • Before India joined the MTCR, the Russian technology of the BrahMos was restricted as the MTCR limits the export of missile technology which can travel beyond 300 kilometres.

  • An international team of astronomers unveiled the first image of a supermassive black hole at the centre of our own Milky Way galaxy, a cosmic body known as Sagittarius A*.
  • Astronomers believe nearly all galaxies, including our own, have these giant black holes at their centre, where light and matter cannot escape.
  • The image, produced by a global team of scientists known as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration.

Kolkata Knight Riders acquire Abu Dhabi franchise

  • Kolkata Knight Riders have acquired the rights to own and operate a franchise in the UAE’s upcoming T20 league and it will based in Abu Dhabi.
  • The franchise will be named Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. This establishes their fourth T20 franchise around the world in IPL, CPL, MLC and now in UAE’s T20 league.
  • Recently, the Knight Riders Group made a significant investment in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and intends to set up a franchise in the greater Los Angeles area.

Campbell Wilson appointed CEO of Air India

  • Campbell Wilson has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Managing Director (MD) of Air India.
  • Wilson was previously the CEO of Scoot, a Singaporean low-cost airline and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
  • Wilson previously worked with SIA in Canada, Hong Kong and Japan before returning to Singapore in 2011 as the founding CEO of Scoot.

Ranil Wickremesinghe takes oath as Sri Lankan Prime Minister

  • Opposition leader and former premier Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn-in as Sri Lanka’s 26th prime minister to stabilise the country’s debt-ridden economy and end the political turmoil.
  • His predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa was forced to resign following violent protests over the worst economic crisis in the island nation.
  • Wickremesinghe, a lawyer-turned politician who has been in Parliament for 45 years, has served as the prime minister on four previous occasions.
