Sadness linked to chain smoking

  • Sadness, and not all negative emotions, lead people to smoking and turn it into an addictive behaviour.
  • Researchers discovered that sadness plays an especially strong role in triggering addictive behaviour relative to other negative emotions like disgust.
  • The findings showed that individuals in the sadness condition ,who watched the sad video and wrote about a personal loss, had higher cravings to smoke than both the neutral group and the disgust group.
  • The result built upon previous research findings that sadness increases financial impatience, measured with behavioural economics techniques.

Inflation set to breach 6%

  • Datais expected showthat inflationhas breached the upper end of the Reserve Bank of India’s 2%-6% target band for the first time since July 2016.
  • Price-growth probably accelerated to 6.7% in December from 5.5% in the previous month.
  • Inflation of 6%-plus would almost certainly bring an end to the RBI’s easing cycle.
  • A rise in core inflation over the coming quarters should prompt the central bank to switch to a tightening mode much sooner than is generally expected.
  • The spike in inflation and expectations of fiscal slippage are weighing on the outlook for Indian sovereign bonds.

Shopper malware

  • A new Trojan application called ‘Shoppers’ is boosting popular shopping app ratings and installations and spreading ads that annoy users.
  • At present danger stemming from this malicious app is limited to unsolicited ads, fake reviews and ratings issued in the name of the victim but it can be altered to create more dangerous effects.
  • Once the Trojan has the permission to use the service, it can gain almost unlimited opportunities to interact with the system interface and applications.

Coast guard ships commissioned

  • Two Indian Coast Guard Ships (ICGS), Annie Besant and Amrit Kaur, were commissioned by Defence Secretary at Kolkata.
  • The ships are also capable of undertaking multi-faceted tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue, and medical evacuation.
  • ICGS Annie Besant and ICGS Amrit Kaur are fitted with state-of-the-art technology, navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery.
  • The ships are also equipped with Bofors 40/60 guns and 12.7 mm SRCGs (Stabilised Remote Controlled Gun) for enhancing the fighting efficiency of the ship.

Kannada scholar M. Chidananda Murthy passes away

  • Noted Kannada scholar Dr M Chidananda Murthy died at a hospital in Bengaluru. He was 88.
  • A vocal Kannada activist through Kannada Shakti Kendra, Murthy also played a key role in a movement that led to Kannada getting classical language status.
  • He was also vocal against the then state government's decision to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanthi.
