Russia sends nuclear capable bombers over Belarus

  • Russia sent two nuclear-capable strategic bombers on a training mission over Belarus in a show of Moscow’s support for its ally amid a dispute over migration at the Polish border.
  • Two Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers practiced bombing runs at the Ruzhansky firing range in Belarus. Belarusian fighter jets simulated an intercept.
  • Russia has strongly supported Belarus amid a tense standoff this week as thousands of migrants, most of them from the Middle East, gathered on the Belarusian side of the border with Poland.

South Africa’s last apartheid president FW de Klerk passes away

  • FW de Klerk, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela and as South Africa’s last apartheid president oversaw the end of the country’s white minority rule, has died at the age of 85.
  • De Klerk was a controversial figure in South Africa where many blamed him for violence against Black South Africans, while some white South Africans saw his efforts to end apartheid as a betrayal.
  • It was de Klerk who in a speech to South Africa’s parliament on February 2, 1990, announced that Mandela would be released from prison after 27 years.

India demands $1 trillion as climate finance

  • India has demanded a trillion dollars over the next decade from developed countries to adapt to, and mitigate, the challenges arising from global warming.
  • Delivering on climate finance is among the stickiest points of contention between developed and developing countries because developed countries, as a group, have failed to provide $100 billion annually by 2020, as promised from a decade ago.
  • The demand comes after India’s surprise announcement at the opening of COP26 negotiations in Glasgow, Scotland, that it would set an ambitious new goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2070.

Australia enters final of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

  • Australia convincingly trounced Pakistan by six wickets with one over to spare to end their T20 World Cup title win hopes.
  • With the win, Australia broke Pakistan’s long-standing winning streak in the UAE. Pakistan registered 16 straight T20I wins before suffering a loss to Australia.
  • Australia will face New Zealand in the final on Sunday. Both Australia and New Zealand are yet to win a T20 World Cup title.
