Congress party spokesperson Khusboo Sundar resigns

  • Congress national spokesperson Kushboo Sundar resigned from the primary membership of the party protesting against some leaders.
  • Sundar, a popular Tamil actor, who was with the DMK before joining the national party in 2014 sent her resignation letter to Congress top leader Sonia Gandhi.
  • She is expected to join BJP and contest upcoming elections to Tamil Nadu assembly.

Over use of sanitizer and soaps can worsen antimicrobial resistance

  • Health experts have warned that the increased use of antibiotics and the widespread use of hand sanitizers and antimicrobial soaps can worsen the situation of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Resistant organisms have become rigidly established in our environment with many infections failing to respond to available antimicrobials.
  • Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest challenges of modern medicine. This antimicrobial resistance mounts problems beyond the geographical as well as species barriers and can transmit from animals to humans.
  • AMR needs to be addressed in totality by all sectors including healthcare, veterinary and agricultural domains.

Blue Flag certification for 8 beaches

  • In a first, eight of India’s beaches including Shivrajpur (Dwarka-Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu), Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka), Kappad (Kerala), Rushikonda (AP), Golden Beach (Odisha), and Radhanagar (A&N Islands) got the eco-label of Blue Flag in a row.
  • Operated by Foundation for Environmental Education, Denmark, Blue Flag is an iconic voluntary award for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators which is awarded to those that meet and maintain the criterias of a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility.
  • The Jury, which takes a final call on this certification, comprises eminent members from the UN Environment Programme, World Tourism Organisation, FEE, and IUCN.

  • Lewis Hamilton ensured his place in Formula One history by equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins, during Eifel Grand Prix.
  • Hamilton took the lead from his Mercedes teammate and polesitter Valtteri Bottas early in the 60-lap race at the famous German circuit and dominated proceedings without serious challenge from second-placed Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.
  • Schumacher’s greatest record of seven world championships is now all but in his hands. He has six already and leads Bottas by 69 points with a maximum of six races remaining.

Rafael Nadal wins French open title

  • Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-0 6-2 7-5 in straight sets to win a record-extending 13th French Open and match Roger Federer with his 20th Grand Slam title.
  • Nadal has now won the men's singles title at the French Open in 13 of the last 16 years. It was Nadal's third victory against Djokovic in the French Open final.
  • Notably, Nadal’s victory was also his 100th career match win at Roland Garros. The Spaniard now boasts of a win-loss record that reads 100-2 at the tournament.
