Eliud Kipchoge becomes 1st person to run marathon under 2 hours

  • Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge made athletics historywhen he became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours.
  • The IAAF has said it would not recognise the run as an official record because it was not in open competition and it used in and out pacemakers.
  • The run, organised and funded by the British chemical company INEOS was Kipchoge's second attempt to break the barrier.

Weight gain before 40 years can lead to cancer

  • According to a study, individuals who are either overweight or obese before the age of 40 have an increased risk of developing different types of cancer.
  • The study also revealed that people who are overweight had 70 per cent increased risk of developing endometrial cancer, 58 per cent greater risk for renal-cell cancer, and 29 per cent more risk for colon cancer.
  • The study also added that the risk increased by 15 per cent for all obesity-related cancers in both sexes.

Dutee Chand breaks 100m national record

  • Sprinter Dutee Chand has smashed her own National record on her wayto gold medal atthe 59th National Open Athletics Championships in Ranchi.
  • She clocked 11.22 seconds in the women's 100m semi-finals to create the record.
  • Earlier she had equalled Rachita Mistry's 11.26-second effort at the Asian Championship, but time of 11.22 seconds in the semi-finals gave her the sole ownership of the National record.

Mary Kom wins bronze in World Boxing Championship

  • Six-time champion MC Mary Kom (51kg)  settled for a bronze medal in the World Women's Boxing Championships after losing to Turkey's Busenaz Cakiroglu.
  • Third seeded Mary Kom lost 1-4 to second seed Cakiroglu, who is the reigning European Championships and European Games gold-medallist.

Alexei Leonov: 1st human to walk in space passes away

  • Alexei Leonov, the Soviet cosmonaut who became the first human to walk in space 54 years ago passed away in Moscow at 85.
  • Apollo-Soyuz 19 was a prelude to one of theearliest international cooperation in spaceand was the first space mission between Soviet union and United States.
