Vikram Sarabhai- Father of Indian Space Program

  • The 100th birth anniversary of Scientist Vikram Sarabhai was celebrated on 12-8-2019.
  • Vikram Sarabhai is known as the father of Indian space program.
  • Born on 12-8-1919 in Ahmedabad, Dr Sarabhai founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad in 1947.
  • He was also chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and played a major role in the creation of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
  • Some other well-known institutions established by Sarabhai are: Faster Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), Kalpakkam, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Variable Energy Cyclotron Project, Kolkata and Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL), Jaduguda (Jharkhand).

Aishwarya Pissay 1st Indian to win world title in Motorsports

India cancels Samjhauta Express

  • India has suspended services of Inter-country train Samjhauta Express with immediate effect.
  • The Samjhauta Express runs from New Delhi to Lahore connecting India and Pakistan.
  • The train was started in 1976 and was the only train connecting India and Pakistan until the Thar Express was started.

Largest Parrot discovered in New Zealand

  • The parrot, Heracles inexpectatus is the size of a human child.
  • The parrot has been expected to be living 20 million years ago. It stood 80-90 cm and weighed about 7 kg.
  • This discovery overtakes Kakapo, the existent largest parrot in the world.
