UK bans commercial ads that reinforce gender prejudices

  • United Kingdom (UK) Government has banned commercial advertisements that reinforce gender prejudices.
  • The ban was imposed by UK Government's advertising watchdog Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
  • It was imposed after ASA found evidence suggesting that adverse stereotypes could restrict choices, aspirations and opportunities of children, young people and adults.
  • These kinds of stereotypes can be reinforced by some advertising that plays part in unequal gender outcomes.

India guest country at Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico

  • India was designated as Guest of Honour at  33rd Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair)in Mexico, the National Book Trust.
  • The book fair will be organized from November 30 - December 8, 2019. The Indian pavilion at the fair will showcase over 35 Indian authors and artists, along with 15 publishing houses.
  • Ancient and rare manuscripts including Ramayana" and "Mahabharata" will be also exhibited along with photo books, handicrafts, and paintings.

Poet and lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passes away

  • Poet and lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at Thiruvananthapuram. He was 83. He had received the 2017 Kerala Sahithya Akademi award for overall contributions.
  • He wrote lyrics for renowned Malayalam movies such as Aashamsakalode, Njattadi, Malootty, Uncle Bun, and Vasudha.
  • He was co-editor of K. Balakrishnan’s Kaumudi Weekly in the sixties. He also had worked at State Institute of Languages in various capacities till 1993.
  • Some of his poetry collections are Mazhayude Jalakam, Njan Ente Kadukalelikku, and Pazhavila Ramesante Kavithakal.
  • His collections of writings includes Mayatha Varakal, Ormayude Varthamanam, and Nervara.

Global internet users have touches 3.8 billion

  • According to Mary Meeker’s 2019 Internet Trends Report, global internet users have touched 3.8 billion which is more than half of the world’s population.
  • China has world’s largest internet user base accounting for 21%, followed by India at 12% and United States at 8%.
  • Asia Pacific region is leading in terms of both the number of users and potential internet users accounting for total 53% of users.
  • Global internet users is around 51% of the total world’s population. It has grown from 29% o world’s population in 2009.
  • Increase in internet users in India is due to introduction of Reliance Jio, which is having total of 307 million subscribers.
