China reports 100 new cases of COVID-19

  • China has reported 99 new coronavirus cases, the highest in a single day in recent weeks, and 63 fresh asymptomatic infections, taking the total number of patients in the country to 82,052.
  • It also said that 63 new asymptomatic cases, including 12 from abroad, were reported on the mainland.
  • Asymptomatic cases refer to people who are tested positive for the coronavirus but develop no symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat. They are infectious and pose a risk of spreading to others.
  • The coronavirus cases are on the rise as hundreds of Chinese nationals held up in different countries where the COVID-19 outbreak is prevalent have returned home with the help of Chinese government.

Arogya Setu app to be used as e-pass

  • Prime minister Narendra Modi said that the tracking app is an essential tool in Covid-19 fight and is possible to use it as an e-pass to facilitate travel from one place to another.
  • The app  will help track the coronavirus infection by using the smartphone's GPS system and Bluetooth and provide information that will help in determining if you have been near a Covid-19 infected person or not.
  • The app uses your location to know of the area you are around comes under the infected areas of the database and also needs an activated Bluetooth to determine if you have been within six feet from the infected person.

Donations to CM relief fund out of CSR ambit

  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) clarified that contributions to ‘Chief Minister’s Relief Fund’ and ‘State Relief Fund’ for Covid-19 cannot be claimed as corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending by companies.
  • This comes after the MCA allowed contributions to the PM CARES fund on 28 March, which was created to collect public donations for Covid-19, as CSR expenditure.
  • It also clarified that payment of daily wages to casual and daily workers and salaries to employees and contract labour won’t qualify as CSR expenditure, stating that it was part of the moral or contractual obligations of the company.

Japanese filmmaker Obayashi dies

  • Nobuhiko Obayashi, one of Japan's most prolific filmmakers who devoted his works to depicting war's horrors and singing the eternal power of movies, has died. He was 82.
  • Obayashi was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2016, and was told he had just a few months. But he continued working, appearing frail and often in a wheelchair.
  • Obayashi is best known for a trilogy of films he shot in Onomichi: “Exchange Students” (1982), “The Girl Who Leapt through Time” (1983) and “Lonely Heart” (1985).
