Mithali Raj becomes first Indian female cricketer to score 10,000 runs

  • Mithali Raj became the first Indian female cricketer and second internationally to complete 10,000 runs across all formats.
  • The 38-year-old Mithali joins England's Charlotte Edwards in the elite club. Mithali achieved the feat during India's innings against South Africa.
  • Mithali has amassed 663 runs in 10 Test matches with a best score of 214, while she has 6938 and 2364 runs from 212 ODIs and 89 T20 Internationals respectively.

Kraigg Brathwaite appointed Captain of West Indies Test team

  • Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite has replaced all-rounder Jason Holder as captain of the West Indies Test team.
  • Kraigg Brathwaite will replace Jason Holder as the West Indies Test Captain. Brathwaite has previously led the team in seven Tests whilst deputising for Holder.
  • Holder, who is the no.1 ranked all-rounder in Test cricket, led West Indies in 37 Test matches between 2015 and 2021 with 11 wins, five draws and 21 defeats.

Warming oceans may cause sharks to be born smaller

  • The warming of worldwide oceans from climate change means baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive, a study has found.
  • The scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks' growing process, and that meant they hatched from eggs earlier and were born exhausted.
  • They found that the sharks reared in the warmest temperatures weighed significantly less than those raised in average temperatures, and they exhibited reduced metabolic performance.

PM Modi to attend first QUAD summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join U.S. President Joseph Biden, Australian PM Scott Morrison and Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga for a virtual summit of the Quadrilateral Framework (Quad).
  • The Quad meeting is dubbed by China as an “Indo-Pacific NATO” and will be watched most closely for signals on how the grouping will deal with the challenge from China’s recent moves in the Pacific as well as at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.
  • In the Quad ministerial meeting members had discussed the need for international cooperation to ensure equitable access to vaccines, especially in developing countries.
  • India has already shipped out more than 48 million doses worldwide, primarily through commercial shipments and the global COVAX alliance.

PM Modi inaugurates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

  • PM Modi has flagged off 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' to mark 75 years of the nation’s Independence.
  • The prime minister will also flag off Padyatra from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on the occasion.
  • The Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav is going to be a series of events that will be organised by the Government to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India's Independence.
  • A national implementation committee headed by the Union home minister Amit Shah was constituted to chalk out policies and planning of events to be undertaken for the commemoration.
