Wrestler Bajrang Punia wins gold medal

  • India's ace wrestler Bajrang Punia won gold medal at International wrestling tournament, “Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov” held in Ruse, Bulgaria.
  • In 65-kilogram freestyle finals, he defeated Jordan Oliver of US by 12-3 score. He also secured maximum ranking points from the tournament.
  • This was Punia's overall 10th medal in international tournaments he participated since 2017 World Championships in Paris.

EU adds 10 countries to tax haven blacklist

  • European Union (EU) has expanded its tax haven blacklist by including 10 countries. With new additions, the list now has 15 countries.
  • Existing seven countries in the list Aruba, Bermuda, Belize, Fiji, Oman, Vanuatu and Dominica were moved from greylist to blacklist due to their inability towards reform commitments.
  • Three other countries added into list- United Arab Emirates, Barbados and Marshall Islands.
  • Tax haven blacklist was first drawn up by EU in 2017 in wake of several tax evasion scandals, including Panama Papers and LuxLeaks.
  • This was part of measures taken by EU to fight tax evasion by multinationals and the rich.
  • These tax havens in list provide taxpayers opportunities for tax avoidance. Moreover, their secrecy and opacity also serve to hide the origin of the proceeds of illegal and criminal activities.

DGCA bans Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes

  • Aviation watchdog Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has banned entry or transit of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircrafts in Indian airspace from 1600 hrs IST or 1030 UTC.
  • It also has grounded all planes of this variants from fleet of Indian airlines for the sake of passenger safety.
  • The ban comes after an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed, killing 157 people including four Indians
  • The airlines affected by this decision are SpiceJet which has 13 jets of model 8 variant and Jet Airways which has 5 jets of this variant.
  • Besides, India 10 countries also have banned flights of the Boeing 737 MAX in the air passenger travel category.

HDFC: 3rd Indian company to achieve Rs. 6 trillion market value

  • HDFC became third Indian company to achieve market value (capitalisation) of more than Rs.6 trillion.
  • Other two companies are Reliance Industries (Rs. 8.52 trillion) and TCS (Rs. 7.49 trillion).
  • HDFC achieved this feat after sudden upsurge in its share prices. Its shares of have risen in each of the last five trading sessions, capping 6% jump to record high of Rs. 2,227.40.
  • According to banks earnings report for quarter ended December 2018, it has witnessed 20% growth in profits and bad loan ratio of less than 1.5%.

Veteran Hindi Newsreader Vinod Kashyap passes away

  • Veteran Hindi Newsreader Vinod Kashyap has passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 88.
  • She served All India Radio (AIR) for about 30 years. She had started her career in Radio as a drama artist.
  • In Radio Awards 2011, Association of Radio Operators for India (AROI) had honoured her with Lifetime Achievement Award in Newsreader category.
