Ross Taylor retires for Test cricket

  • Veteran batsman Ross Taylor said goodbye to Test cricket as New Zealand thumped Bangladesh in the second and final Test match at the Hagley Oval stadium in Christchurch.
  • Ross Taylor has a New Zealand record of 7,683 runs to his name from the 110 Tests he played for his country.
  • One of only four New Zealanders to play 100 Tests, he also holds the nation’s record for ODI runs (8,581) and centuries (21), and was the world’s first to play in 100 internationals in all formats.

Tata Group to be the new sponsor of IPL

  • Tata Group has replaced Chinese mobile maker Vivo as the title sponsor for Indian Premier League for an undisclosed amount.
  • Vivo had bid ?2,200 crore for title sponsorship rights from 2018-2022 which means the Chinese company had the rights as the title sponsor for one more year.
  • It is learnt that Tata Group could remain title sponsors for the IPL’s 2023 season too as that was the one year concession given to Vivo since it lost a season of sponsorship in 2020.

Sea-to-sea variant of BrahMos missile successfully tested

  • An extended range sea-to-sea variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired by India from the Indian Navy’s newly commissioned INS Visakhapatnam.
  • BrahMos, deployed by the Navy on its warships first in 2005, has the capability to hit sea-based targets beyond radar horizon.
  • This version of the missile has been designed to launch either in a vertical or a horizontal mode from moving/stationary assets to target both land and sea targets.

Urjit Patel appointed Vice President of AIIB

  • Former RBI governor Urjit Patel was appointed as vice president for investment operations in South Asia at the Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB),
  • Patel was the 24th governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), succeeding RaghuramRajan on September 5, 2016. Patel had abruptly resigned in December 2018 citing “personal reasons”.
  • AIIB is a multilateral development bank that aims to improve economic and social outcomes in Asia. The bank currently has 104 members, including 17 prospective members from around the world.

India’s passport rank improves

  • India’s passport power has improved this quarter compared to 2021. It now ranks at 83rd position in the Henley Passport Index, climbing seven places from 90th rank last year.
  • The current rankings are for first quarter of 2022 and India shares the position with Sao Tome and Principe in Central Africa, behind Rwanda and Uganda.
  • Henley Passport Index ranks world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without prior visa and is based on data from International Air Transport Association (IATA).
