Longest serving British-Indian MP Keith Vaz retires

  1. Keith Vaz, the longest-serving Indian-origin MP in the House of Commons, has announced his retirement from Parliament after 32 years in the wake of a drug scandal.
  2. Vaz had been the Labour Party’s MP for Leicester East since 1987 but announced in a statement overnight that he would not be seeking re-election in the December 12 General Election.
  3. Mr. Vaz had played a prominent role in the India-UK relations over the years and hosted numerous Indian ministers and MPs during their visit to Britain.

Former Chief Election Commissioner of India T.N. Seshan passes away

  • Former Chief Election Commissioner Tirunellai Narayana Seshan, who had become an icon of Indian bureaucracy for ushering in tectonic reforms in the country's electoral process during his tenure passed away in Chennai. 
  • A retired 1955 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, TN Seshan had led the Election Commission from 1990 to 1996.
  • He had received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for his initiatives in making the electoral process more transparent.

Bolivian president Morales resigns

  • Bolivian President Evo Morales has said that he would resign after the military called on him to step down.
  • Mr. Morales, the country's leader for nearly 14 years, said that he would submit his resignation letter to help restore stability.
  • Mr. Morales had agreed to hold new elections after a report from the Organization of American States (OAS), which conducted an audit of the October 20 vote, revealed serious irregularities in the election.

Shiv Sena minister in union cabinet Arvind Sawant resigns

  • The resignation comes in the wake of Shiv Sena severing ties with BJP in Maharashtra to form government with the help of NCP and Congress.
  • The NCP and Congress had made it clear that Shiv Sena needs to quit NDA before joining hands with them in Maharashtra.
