Pulitzer winning scholar Martin Sherwin passes away

  • Martin J Sherwin, a leading scholar of atomic weapons who in A World Destroyed challenged support for the U.S. bombing of Japan, has passed away.
  • He was best known for American Prometheus published in 2005 and winner of the Pulitzer for biography.
  • The book was widely praised as a comprehensive and invaluable study of the so-called “father of the atomic bomb” who later had his telephones tapped and his security clearance revoked during the McCarthy era of the 1950s.

Facebook to curb sale of Amazon land

  • Several parts of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest are being illegally sold on Facebook, an investigation by BBC revealed
  • The social networking firm has said it will stop people from selling land in ecological conservation areas within the Amazon rainforest on its platform. The policy is applicable to WhatsApp and Instagram as well.
  • Facebook’s existing marketplace policy prohibits the sale of animals or animal products, and that has now been expanded to include land in ecologically-sensitive areas.

Malayalam actor NedumudiVenu passes away

  • NedumudiVenu, one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile character actors, passed away. He was 73.
  • In a career spanning more than four decades and over 500 films, Venu has portrayed a wide range of characters that portrayed his histrionic skills.
  • After proving his mettle on the stage, he made his film debut with G. Aravindan’sThambu in 1978. He showed the first signs of his brilliance a year later, as Chellappanshari in Padmarajan’sThakara.
  • One of his most memorable roles came in 1981, as the eponymous thief in Padmarajan’sKallanPavithran.

OneWeb launches satellite on GSLV mk-3 and PSLV

  • OneWeb has entered an arrangement with the commercial arm of ISRO, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), to launch its satellite in India from 2022.
  • The arrangement has been made through a letter of intent (LOI) with NSIL, to use Indian-built PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and the heavier GSLV-MkIII (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle).
  • OneWeb is amongst the founding members of ISpA, and will work with stakeholders across for the development of India’s space ecosystem.

Chennai Super Kings enters IPL final

  • Chennai Super Kings enter Indian Premier League final after beating Delhi Capitals by four wickets in the first Qualifier.
  • CSK reached the target of 173 with two balls to spare. For DC, Tom Curran took three wickets while Anrich Nortje and Avesh Khan got one each.   
  • Earlier, Prithvi Shaw top-scored with a 34-ball 60, while captain Rishabh Pant and ShimronHetmyer contributed 51 not out and 37 respectively after DC scored 172 for 5 after being invited to bat.
  • Josh Hazlewood was the pick of CSK bowlers with figures of 2/29 while Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali took a wicket apiece.
