GST reviews

  • The government has begun the biggest review of GST, including a possible resetting of rates along with a scrutiny of the slabs-to tone up collections and plug leakages.
  • The task has been assigned to a 12-member committee of state and central government officials to augment GST collection and administration.
  • GST collections have slowed down in recent months and have grown at a shade under 5% during the first half of the current financial year, against the target of 13%. 

Iran tanker attacked

  • Two rockets struck an Iranian tanker traveling through the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia amid months of heightened tensions between Tehran and the US.
  • The reported attack comes after the US has alleged that in past months Iran attacked oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Recently Saudi Arabia's vital oil industry had come under a drone-and-cruise-missile attack, halving the kingdom's output.

Nobel prizes for Literature and Peace

  • Polish author Olga Tokarczuk and Austrian novelist Peter Handke have been named the 2018 and 2019 winners of Nobel Prize for Literature. The prize was postponed in 2018 for the first time in 70 years after the academy was hit by a sexual assault scandal .
  • Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his peacemaking efforts with Eritrea.

Anil Kumble appointed head coach of Kings XI Punjab

  • Anil Kumble has been appointed as the head coach of IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab starting the 2020 season. 
  • Kumble has previously served as India's head coach in 2016-17 but this will be his first coaching role with an IPL franchise.

Saxophone maestro Kadri Gopalnath passes away

  • Padma Shri awardee and noted saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath breathed his last on11th October. He was 69 and was hospitalised for age-related issues.
  • He has won the Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award, Karnataka Kalashree for his contributions.
  • He is among the few Carnatic musicians to have performed at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London.
